Diet Plan for Diabetics
Nina Rodriquez is faced with a scenario that can affect the control of her blood sugar level and therefore contribute to complication in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Based on the current assessment, the patient faces significant health due to her weight, body mass index and the diet full of fat and starches. While at home, the blood sugar level of the patient is typically elevated and this has contributed to her obesity and peripheral vascular disorder and blood pressure (Clark, 2015). Attending a family event will be challenging for her condition due to the nature of food that will be prepared, the temptation to overeat and also unhealthy food and cuisines.
As a Community Health Nurse (CHN), the situation presented by Ms. Rodriquez can be managed through the creation of a diet plan and healthy eating education. A session can be organized to train the patient on healthy eating, commitment to the diet plan, management of blood sugar levels and self-testing (Clark, 2015). Ability to monitor her blood sugar level during the family get-together will be critical in eliminating risks of hyperglycemia and other diabetes complications. Patient education by the CHN will also improve Ms. Rodriquez ability to ensure that the opportunity to be with her family does not present significant health risks.
Planning for the family dinners is also an essential aspect of her trip as it will eliminate possible health risks.

While her family can have food preferences during this period, Ms. Rodriquez should ensure her food is cooked with oil, not butter, focus on white protein-rich food such as fish and seafood, avoid fatty beacon and ham and also substitute low-fat dairy (Ruhee & Mahomoodally, 2015). Focusing on whole grain meals, which other members of the family would also love is also a recommended plan as it helps in observing the calories.
