Post 16 Options for Young People and Adults
Introduction
Traditionally, options for the pupils at the age of 16 years and above were limited to either continue their education or leave school so that they engage in employment. Although, many pupils still prefer either of these two options, many opportunities have been made available for these pupils (Meschi 183). The government seems to have increased the focus on the number of options for those pupils aged 16 years and above. The reason for this increased focus is to see the number of those pupils who are not in employment, education or training reduced to a bigger level. To achieve this, the following post 16 options are available for young people and adults.
6th form
The 6th form education is available for the students between the ages of 16 to 18 where they are allowed to choose their subjects of interest (Meschi 184). At this level, the students are more confident about their strengths as they have already taken public examinations. Students at the sixth form use the opportunity to plan for their life beyond by choosing both inside and beyond the classroom.
Further Education College
Further Education College is the level of study a student can take after finishing GCSEs at the school (Meschi 184). Further education is vital in boosting career prospects and the potential of future earnings. It is as well the foundation which prepares a student for university education.
Apprenticeship
Apprenticeship is a national program designed to train the students between 16 to 24 years’ old who are either in employment or have left full-time education (Meschi 184).

The programs are helpful to the students in building up skills and knowledge, learning about the job with employers as well gaining more qualifications and money.
Higher Education College
Higher education in most cases refers to courses that are more than the qualifications at a Level 3 mostly studied at the university and higher education qualification colleges. Higher education is flexible and allows those adults who work for years to go back to higher education and study. Anyone returning to higher education at a later stage in life is assured of financial support. It is very important especially when it comes to developing good career and lifestyle that is healthy.
Voluntary Work
Volunteer work involves engaging in community services for 20 hours in a week without pay. It involves giving one’s services for free with the hope that volunteering might lead to employment. Thus, volunteer work gives an opportunity for future employment and further training in future.
Traineeship
Those people who lack skills and experience which the employers are looking for in the employment can go through traineeship. It will help them acquire these skills as it offers work placement of high quality, prepares for practical work as well as giving a chance for one to improve in any of the required disciplines. Employers can still support trainees with welfare benefits such as transport while on traineeship.
Vocational Qualifications
Vocational qualification combines the academic learning with the practical work experience. Academic learning, in this case, includes examinations and coursework. With the vocational qualifications, a person can further his or her education at the university or get into the employment.
Adult and Community Learning
It involves taking a step back in education where the community learning centers for the adults are established. The adults are offered various courses that allow them to acquire the required skills for employment. The aim is to meet the needs of the adult individuals and the local community.
Entry to Employment
The entry to employment involves a person getting into the required career job according to the required skills. The person getting into the employment will boost the earning and live a healthy lifestyle. Also once being employed, he or she gains more skills and experience that will lead to the promotion or go for employment at the higher level.
Conclusion
In conclusion, therefore, pupils at the age of 16 years and above have a variety of options to choose. The options include sixth form, Further Education College, Higher Education College, apprenticeship, traineeship and the entry to employment. Any of the option chosen helps the person develop more skills and knowledge needed towards his or her career and education.
