Othello
My name is Othello but in the city-state of Venice, people also refer to me as “the moor (an African)” because of my skin color. I started as a noble military man who was a respected war hero, eloquent storyteller and a loving husband. However, I ended up being a jealous, violent and irrational husband who murdered his wife upon being manipulated by Iago that my wife was adulterous. Initially, my successful profession brought me high status but my foreign origin and color separated me from those with whom I worked and lived. Being a military man, I got the reputation for courage as well as good judgment as far as military matters are concerned (Shakespeare N.p). My tragedy started the moment I fell in love with Desdemona. Iago worked on my social and personal insecurity until I believed his combination of flimsy circumstantial evidence and lies. Inflamed with jealousy, I killed her, only to realize that I was misled and has murdered the woman who faithfully loved me, leaving me in unimaginable despair.
The grounds of my tragedy and misery can be partly explained by the deep-seated racism which poisoned the Venetians view towards me and also how I perceived myself. My color was crucial for my downfall. My visible alien racial identity made me and my wife more vulnerable to Iago’s manipulations than if I was an equally indispensable white man. Being a black outsider, I unconsciously shared the white man’s perception of my blackness, making me more vulnerable.
Wait! Othelos book paper is just an example!
It is a pity that the noble, respected man and a loving husband who was also loved by his wife tragically turns into a monster just because of his insecurities of the skin color.
