Parents of To Kill a Mockingbird
There is no perfection in parenting as different people have their own approach to raising the children. Parents aim is to ensure they raise morally upright children, though every parent’s goal is to ensure their children are healthy and safe. These aspects of parenting are also portrayed by the parents in To Kill a Mockingbird.
Atticus Finch is a father who has raised his children to be of sound behavior at all times. He wants his children to grow physically mentally and morally upright as he reprimands his children when they stray with love and strictness. He punishes Jem when he destroys some flowers on Mrs. Dubose’s property by reading to her every afternoon. He also set an example for his children when he unsuccessfully defends a black man in a racist community.
Bob Ewell fails as a parent since his children lack morals integrity and respect. He sets a poor example to his children by being the most violent person and his children follow in his footsteps successfully. His family is described as a family of mean people when Burris Ewell is rude to Miss Caroline. He is strict but his strictness is not healthy for his children.
“…the Cunningham’s hadn’t taken anything from or off of anybody since the migrated to the new world. He says that once you earned their respect they were for you tooth and nail” (Lee 298). Walter Cunningham is a typical example of parents with unquestionable integrity. He believes in hard work and as trained his son to do the same.

Despite him being poor the community respects him. He has instilled the tough love discipline in his son.
In conclusion, over-parenting cripples children as they step into adulthood and make them unable to face merest setbacks. A caring parent with good morals impacts children positively while a strict parent with no morals raises weak children.
