Women in the Sex Work concerning the Novel ‘The Round House’
According to Kempadoo, Sanghera, and Pattanaik, women in sex work involves all activities that females undertake that includes sexual relations with a variety of partners. In the novel, the author, Louise Elizabeth, tries to elaborate and make awareness of the plight of women throughout the story. In chapter nine of the story, the topic of women in sex work is evident through the roles the characters fulfill. Therefore, in this paper, discussions of this topic concerning chapter nine of the novel will be achieved.
Notably, the topic on sex work is evident in the situation where Sonja reveals to Joe the atrocities she faced when she was a stripper. Surprisingly, after the dance, Sonja explains to Joe how her former manager cut her breast with a razor when she did the role of a stripper in the club (Erdrich 56). Therefore, this proofs that Sonja was associated with sex work violence through the instance of brutal mutilation of her breast by the manager. This occurrence seems to be painful as Joe could not control his sad feelings and after that, he starts crying.
Moreover, the topic of sex work is also evident where Linden Lark’s, a mail carrier, actions tend to align to this topic. Firstly, the character is identified to have violently raped Geraldine and even murders Malya, his girlfriend, after finding out that she had an affair with another man (Mace 162).

Moreover, Malya’s relationship with the foreign man was out of the dire greed of money where she used to be paid by the international man after sexual activity and thus the main reason for her murder (Erdrich 72). Nevertheless, this describes Malya as a sex worker thus aligning to the topic of sex work in women.
In conclusion, a well-developed discussion on the topic of women in sex work in line to chapter nine of the novel has been achieved. Various occasions such as stripping act by Sonja and prostitution by Malya ascertains the topic of discussion. Therefore, this tends to be the central theme in chapter nine of the novel.
