Dear Editor,
In the article by Billie Schwab dated 25th January 2018, the author argues that social media affects the sleep, body image, and social interactions of people. The points raised by the author are valid and people need to re-examine the use of social media in their lives.
Since social media affects the sleeping pattern of many people, it is also going to impact school life and workers’ productivity. When people sleep late, they are less productive during the day and that is a problem.
Secondly, young people are suffering from depression and stress because of low self-esteem associated with social media bullying. Adolescents with weird body feature face harassment on social media while others feel inadequate when comparing themselves with their peers on social media. Parents and teachers need to monitor the activities of teenagers to avoid serious social problems such as suicide and mass shootings.
Lastly, Schwab points out that people today spend too much on social media at the expense of real-life interactions. Most of the relationships on social media are not genuine. Some people create false profiles just to impress their audience. Therefore, people should focus more on their face to face interactions and use social media sparingly.
