The Intent of Positive Behavior Support
Positive behavior support is a program that is designed to understand the factors that lead to a person maintaining a specific negative behavior. This program is used to help understand the causes of behavior that a child may have and consequently come up with relevant measures to help the individual to adjust appropriately (Kincaid, Dunlap, Kern, Lane, Bambara, Brown, & Knoster, 2016). The system helps identify the behavior clearly and then identify when and what causes it to occur. Lastly, one can tell the consequences that make the behavior to be maintained. This helps understand the aspects that reinforce the behavior and how best they can be dealt with.
The Three Levels of Prevention
There are three levels of prevention that are used to try and understand and change a child’s behavior when it is deemed to be undesirable. The first level is that of primary prevention which is a system used in the whole school and is applied to all the students. Among the strategies at this level include the active supervision of common areas and effective teaching practices. The second level is that of secondary prevention, and it is applied to students who are not responsive to primary prevention strategies.
Such students mostly risk academic failure and among the strategies employed include academic support as well as skills training. It is done in small groups and the skills taught are custom made for the needs of the group involved.

The last level is tertiary prevention, and this is a level that deals with students that show persistent disciplinary problems. The key to this level is that the tactics used are very individualized for each student and this means that every student that has to undergo this level has to do this with the consideration of their individual disciplinary issues. The methods that are used include the increased use of natural support including the family and friends as well as de-escalation training. The student also continues to have the other levels of prevention, and the tertiary is used as an addition to reinforce behavior changes.
