This study by Hadi Hunaina and Hadi Shamsa was done at the school of nursing and midwifery in Aga Khan University, Pakistan. The nurses and researchers took the initiative to establish the postpartum depression (PPD) awareness and treatment options during motherhood (Hadi Hunaina and Hadi Shamsa, 2015). The depression occurs after delivery and takes a maximum period of one year according to most clinical researchers. Childbirth may lead to abnormal feelings such as exhaustion and anxiety that result to postpartum depression. The problem can affect the child, mother or the partner depending on the severity of the condition. Taking care of the newborn babies is also an additional responsibility to the family which may cause distressing attitudes leading to high stress levels.
According to this study, postpartum depression has different treatments. The disorder can be prevented at different levels to avoid severe harm to new mothers and infants. Preventive measures are recommended to avoid intensification of the symptoms. The PPD risk factors can be reduced through community awareness and clinical assessment. Screening tools such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) can help in early identification of the PPD in women.

The tool assesses anxiety, cognitive-impairment, and self-perception of patients. Further, postpartum depression from childbirth to three months can be reduced through breastfeeding. Hadi Hunaina and Hadi Shamsa (2015) note that tertiary prevention measures require comprehensive interventions that include cognitive-behavioral therapy, social support, dietary management and interpersonal psychotherapy. Anti-depressants such as Serotonin-Selective Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) decrease severe depressing conditions. Nutrition is also important in preventing PPD. Mothers with increased depressive symptoms can avoid food substances with high levels of vitamin B3.
