Practicum Experience
The self-care theory was introduced by Dorothea E. Orem, and it is based on the belief that health can only be achieved through enhancement of mental and body structures and functionality. According to the theory, health encompasses physical, psychological, interpersonal and social aspects. Dorothea believed that people should take responsibility for their health and the health of others in their families. The theory emphasizes on self-reliance as one of the factors that lead to the achievement of good health in the society. This theory promotes self-care and empowering of the patient to meet their own health needs. This self-care theory will be the primary theory guiding my nursing care practicum experience.
Self-Care Theory Definition
The patient’s health is the fundamental factor that the self-care theory focuses on whereby it suggests that the environment plays a significant role in enhancing health and healing of patients. A healthy person can efficiently take care of their healthcare needs, however, when sickness sets in, nursing care is needed to enable the individual in accomplishing self-care tasks (Matarese, Lommi & De Marinis, 2017). Nurses are generally required to assess the state of a patient and determine whether they can overcome health-associated limitations on their own.
In the Self Care Deficit Nursing Theory, the fundamental role of a nurse is to provide the healthcare services that patients cannot adequately provide for themselves.

According to the theory, conventional healthcare procedures can be performed by an individual without the help of nursing professionals (Wong, Choi, & Lam, 2015). However, these individuals need to be empowered with knowledge and skills on how they should handle different cases to maximize healthcare service delivery and general wellbeing.
