The process of listening
Listening is an integral part of effective communication. But did you know that listening is a process? In my speech, I will take you through the various stages involved in the listening process for audiences.
The listening process is divided into five different stages (De Vito 1). The first stage is the receiving stage whereby a person involves their ears and purposefully focuses on hearing the message being delivered by filtering out any other sources of information that may bring confusion. This stage is very crucial as it connects the sender of the message to the receiver. The receiving stage is followed by understanding stage which involves a person’s brain. In this stage, a person usually tries to absorb the meaning of the message being delivered. Effective communication relies on understanding a message in the right way. However, many are the times that the understanding of the message differs in individuals mainly on the basis of personal experiences or one’s discernment. For instance, after receiving a message one may understand it as false while others may take it as true based on their different experiences.
The next stage is the remembering stage. Often, it is believed that remembering a message means that a person was attentively listening. However, if the understanding of the message was wrong then the remembrance will also be inaccurate. (De Vito 1). For instance, if a teacher gives instructions on an exam, the learners will remember what they were taught based on their understanding of the instructions.

Remembering is then followed by the evaluating stage. In this stage, a person makes a judgment on the message being delivered. A listener needs to keep away any misconception they may have on a speaker so as to be able to evaluate the delivered message in the right way. The final stage of the listening process is responding or feedback. In this stage, a listener shows how involved they are with the message. For instance, how a listener responds, shows how the impact of the message on them.
In conclusion, listening is a complex process and it is an avenue of errors in communication. For effective communication, the audience needs to follow the process of listening to the latter.
