Presentation Summary and Reflection: Business Ethics and Corporate Governance
The presentation offers invaluable information on the nexus between human character and organizational behavior. It discusses self-respect and self-esteem and their relationship; identity; ethics and business; business and society; ethics in business decision making process; the invention of the corporation and its evolution; capitalism and democracy; and financial scandals of the past and our times. All these concepts underscore the importance of ethics in business for the betterment of society from the perceptive of good personal conduct.
Understanding the importance of ethics in business and the role of corporate responsibility requires one first to appreciate the fact that the human and business can never be separated. Thus, a corporation is as good as its people, and the vision and mission of the firm are a reflection of the stakeholder’s interests. Before the emergence of corporate social responsibility, the firm was mainly concerned about the interests of the shareholders and no one else. However, business ethics through the lens of corporate governance has ensured that businesses not only consider the rights of the shareholders but all stakeholders, who include employees, suppliers, customers, government and the community.
The presentation brings into perspective two concepts that apply to the human and also are congruent to the corporation.

That is self-respect and self-esteem. As much as an individual with self-respect will exude it through actions, an organization dealing with legal business and with the right mission and vision will try to do what is right always. The organization makes a promise through its vision and mission statements and abides by them through ensuring that the tenets of corporate governance guide every one of its transactions. Integrity for the firm is demonstrated through accountability for a public corporation and stewardship for a government body or parastatal. But most importantly it must be acknowledged that it is the individuals who act with integrity on behalf of the firm for it to be said to be ethical (O’Sullivan, 2012).
