Psychodynamic Approaches to Social Problems
Regarding a problem I have overcome, I can say it is shyness. I came to understand that it is caused by factors like public humiliation, shaming family, or parenting experience. Precisely, if I lack successful experience in social relations it results in shyness my age as an adult. Usually, when someone lives around bad people or interprets his or her experience negatively, then it could make the person shy. A high number of shy people are as a result of influence by social experiences like for instance; children become shy as they interact with their parents (Corey, 2017, p.13). Authoritative or overprotective parents cause children to be shy as they are not allowed to experience things, thus end up developing difficulties in gaining social skills.
When I look at how human function and their ways of interaction I can understand the structure of personality using psychodynamic ideas (Corey, 2017, p. 68). For instance, the ideas or theories inform that peoples’ behaviors and feelings are strongly affected by the unconscious motives (Corey, 2017, p 61). The unconscious mind is the primary source of behavior, and I relate this with an iceberg where the essential part is that which is not seen (Corey, 2017, p. 63). The ideas also make me understand that personality is made up of three parts. The first include inherited components of personality, sex life and aggressive instinct (Corey, 2017, p.

61). The second part is the personify component of decision making while the last part incorporates human values and society morals, learned from other people like parents (Corey, 2017, p. 62).
The psychodynamic idea that I did not like and it is related to the understanding of self is the concept of “repression and memory” developed by Sigmund Freud (Corey, 2017, p. 60). The idea argues that when a thought, feeling or memory is painful for a person, the individual pushes information out of consciousness. The repressed thought may later affect my behavior without my knowledge, but how can I forget a traumatic event like parent’s death? In my opinion, it is skeptical for the psychologists when they support that repressed memories exit whereas such claims are not a predictive science. I am aware that some theories rest on little objectives and observation while part of the ideas offers only a few hypotheses that can be tested. At a glance, modern research challenges the concept of repression for instance, when people spare their ego through neglection of threatening information (Corey, 2017, p. 84). Therefore, the idea of memory repression clashed with my understanding of self as there is no sufficient scientific evidence to support that theory.
