The most dangerous threat in this country is the complex policy areas of defense and law enforcement. United States government has continued to protect its citizens against domestic and foreign enemies but the development of comprehensive policies to undertake the protection duties confronts complex issues (Peters, 2012, p.413). Creating a longstanding defense policy is problematic as Peters (2012, p.414) admits the U.S faces an uncertain future, the commitment of allies and changing strategies of its adversaries. Hence, defense policymaking has become a gamble due to complex potential threats after such as North Korea, Iran, and Russia (p.416). Peters (2012, p.416) reveals that the environment of defense policy contains adversaries, potential adversaries, less valuable allies in Western nations, high-cost technology, and ambiguous public opinion.
Federal law enforcement presents a high threat in the United States due to a potential threat to civil liberties and enforcing laws that safeguard the large public well-being (p.413). The government has developed policies to coordinate efforts at the state and local levels but the implementation faces political deterrence. However, the implementation of proposed laws is impossible with the impending budget cuts amidst retaining defense-related employment, abandoning the conventional use of force, and developing a framework for sustaining federal support (p.

433). Furthermore, domestic issues such as gun control, causes of crimes, protecting the rights of the accused, and solving the contentious death penalty remains problematic.
Solving the complex threat of defense and law enforcement will require new policies to champion increased spending. The policies will promote effective strategy development and sustain effective conventional deterrents. Avoiding budget cuts will reduce fear among law enforcement and military leaders who view reductions as impediments to meeting demands on security (p.433). Budget allocation will require a supportive political and financial climate. Moreover, relying on technology will reduce costs associated with traditional military strategies but the U.S will incur high initial costs (p. 421). Rethinking the values relating to domestic, social, and politician concerns facing defense and law enforcement will simplify policy-making.
