The Impact of Teratogens on Later Personality Outcomes
Teratogens are agents that cause embryo malformations. Environmental factors can cause an abnormality to the embryo during the third to eighth week of pregnancy. Ingestion of drugs, chemicals, alcohol, being vulnerable to infections and tobacco can offer high chances for embryo abnormalities (Bareuther and Burke, 5). Maternal infections like herpes, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, and rubella are usually transfused into the embryo’s bloodstream thus leading to the violent neonatal and prenatal deaths. The significant impacts that end up to cause personality change to the child and later to adolescent and adulthood are vulnerability to emotional imbalances, high affinity for drug use, alcohol addiction and nicotine use.
Most alcohol and drug addicts are the victims of teratogens. The impacts of teratogens affect an individual’s psychological well-being. Additionally, teratogens affect social behavior of an individual depending on the effects that the chemicals yielded to the mother during pregnancy (Bareuther and Burke 3). A child’s nutritional behavior is affected especially if the mother was adversely affected by external factors that led to emotional imbalances and lack of appetite. Anxiety can be transferred to the child who then becomes a challenge to the psychological well-being of the child. Mother use of Addiction to drugs during pregnancy is assigned to the child thus the behavior manifests to adulthood (Bareuther and Burke 4). The manifestation of shifted behavior affects a child’s psychological development thus the effect becomes challenging to tame. Excessive use of alcohol and drugs lowers the intelligence level of the unborn child.
