Catherine Opie: “I’m very empathetic to the construction of masculinity within our culture and how we build these identities up.”
To understand the full meaning of the quote, one should know the story of C. Opie. It would be wrong to make up something a person does not know. Thus one should learn her story to describe the meaning of the quote.
Her last project of filming footballers spontaneously led to many thoughts, which she tried to encompass in one quote. Seeing many LGBT people, she noticed the tendency to take guys like guys and girls as girls. It implies that labels for boys and girls should not alter within societies, since people get used to accepting boys playing cars, playing sports whereas girls dressing up, playing with dolls, and wearing pink skirts. However, Opie brings out a different angle of these biases. For instance, her son wanted to dress up in pink clothes at one time; and because her son did not have a physically strong father, he did not feel ashamed of himself. Also, Opie, being his mother, accepted this fact and pointed out that no one should have put any limits on kids while growing up.
Sometimes children feel ashamed because they are not as their fathers. For example, if a father is a football coach and a boy wants to dance ballet, he will feel embarrassed and uncertain, as the father expects him to be sporty and strong. All of these labels lead to non-confidence and misunderstanding. Therefore, people build up the perception of someone based on stereotypes.

Wait! Quote by Catherine Opie I’m very empathetic tot he construction of masculinity within our culture and how we build these identities up paper is just an example!

However, it would be wrong to support someone and refuse the other one, since every individual has the different point of view. However, the fact that C. Opie explains bogus insight about people within societies reveals her lifestyle and attitude to life.
