Shakespeare’s Presentation of the Relationship Between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
A relationship is a sharing of compassion, understanding, and tribunals with another humankind, a connection between a female and a male sexually and emotionally, or it may as well be merely love or kindness entangled between two persons. These characteristics of relationship are, and other more are shown in the famous tragedy of Macbeth written by William Shakespeare. The manner in which the relationship between the Lord and Lady Macbeth changes drastically in the entire play is an illustration of how delicate a relationship is. Just one action or word could destroy a stable bond. The drama, Macbeth, is an excellent example of a perfect relationship that starts a fight with a higher power, and finally plunges into hopelessness with no exit or turning back (Shakespeare).
In the play, the relationship is presented as one controlled by greed desire for power. The writing demonstrates how ambition overrides the conscience and inhibitions of a good man. At the start, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are portrayed as two honorable Scots in a good relationship, faithful to their king and in a position of authority. Macbeth is [presented as a brave and upright man, for instance, King Duncan mentions Macbeth as “O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman!” (Shakespeare I, II), Macbeth is admired by everyone for his abilities in the battle. However, the relation and balance of power in Lord and Lady Macbeth’s marriage leads to the relationship’s ultimate downfall.

Macbeth’s downfall begins when he first encounters the witches who then tell him that he was destined to be Thane and King of Cawdor.
Lady Macbeth performs a significant role in persuading Macbeth to follow the evil path as he does. From the start, Lady Macbeth is portrayed as very strongminded in the drama. Lady Macbeth is unfeminine and even evil sometimes. Lady Macbeth’s ambition thus becomes the substance that efficiently unleashes the correct evil side of Macbeth. Through the play, it is evident that she has a substantial impact on Macbeth’s actions and also responsible for increasing his ambition. Lady Macbeth uses utterances such as “too full of the milk of human kindness” to insult Macbeth into heeding her. Thus, demonstrates how cold Macbeth has become. Just like milk is the food to new-borns, as she implies, Macbeth too was like a kind kid unable to kill anyone, which is another technique she utilized to provoke Macbeth into murdering his king (Shakespeare).
Lady Macbeth’s speeches also expose her yearning to become the Queen of Scotland hence persuades her husband to kill King Duncan and start his rule of tyranny. Her control and coldness are revealed when she begins plotting Duncan’s death with Macbeth. The impact that lady Macbeth has over her partner is a pure indication of the strong desire for power that fears no obstacle. She even says that Macbeth should “look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under it”. Additionally, she sneaks into the king’s chamber to return the blades showing her calm control over such a grave issue (Shakespeare).
After Duncan’s murder, Lady Macbeth expresses signs of anxiety. She utters “It was the owl that shrieked, the fatal bellman. I heard the owl scream, and the crickets cry.” An indication that she feels uneasy over the killing voices she hears are warning symbols of demise and reprimand. Finally, Mrs. Macbeth’s own inciting “Wouldst thou have that, which thou esteem ‘st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem…” after the further critic of his character “When you durst do it, then you were a man…” ultimately sees her will done. Their relationship’s turning point is when she says “My hands are of your color, but I shame, To wear a heart so white” (Shakespeare II, II, V) when she critiques Macbeth’s seeming lack of masculinity and composure.
Having murdered Duncan, Macbeth is now wicked and absorbed into evil. As their relationship weakens, they also deteriorate individually. Lady Macbeth commits suicide when she feels that Macbeth had neglected her and even she could not live with the thoughts of her evil doings. While in her sleep, she begins to walk and reveal Duncan’s killing through the conversations in her slumber. She could still smell Duncan’s blood on her hands “Here’s the smell of the blood still?” (Shakespeare V, I. )After Lady Macbeth commits suicide, a messenger approaches Macbeth with the message of his wife’s death, but Macbeth does not show any emotional reaction. He has grown evil and wicked. Unlike Macduff’s response to the end of his families, Macbeth is not saddened or upset by Lady Macbeth’s sudden death. He is lost in his desire to kill anyone that threatens his life that he fails to shed a tear. Even after his wife’s death, Macbeth is not willing to give up his power without a fight.
In conclusion, the relationship between the two characters is complicated by their strong desire for power which drives them insane eventually; the lady’s supremacy in the association reduces to an uneasy naive role, a pivotal dissimilarity to the figure she played at the start of Macbeth. Equally, Macbeth grows into a strange power seeker. Through the use of language in this play, it is evident that Shakespeare aims to portray Macbeth’s personality transformation by describing him to feel only rage, shown by his lack of compassion towards Lady Macbeth’s eventual demise; Macbeth acts like the news of his wife’s passing was unimportant. To seize power, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth needed to murder the existing monarchy embodied by Duncan. Regrettably, this prophecy results in their demise and executions (Shakespeare).
