Religious non-conformism
Emily Dickinson was born in the 1830’s in Massachusetts. During this century there was a struggle between Christian beliefs and scientific concepts. Therefore she had to battle between faith and doubts about society’s perception of God. Most of her poetry work was discovered after her death; consequently, she never got to see its recipient.
In the poem “Some keep the Sabbath going to Church” Emily challenges the ordinary Christians’ way of life. She is of the idea that not going to church does not make a person any less of a believer. The poet confesses that she does not keep the Sabbath day by going to church although that is not what is expected of her from other Christians. The implication of this is her unwillingness to live as a typical Christian. In the second stanza, Emily describes how most believers keep the Sabbath day to honor it (Some keep the Sabbath in Surplice) and then mentions the different approach she takes on the same. From this, we note that Emily always wanted to be different from other Christians and even did not want to associate them. Because by doing things contrary to how most of them (Christians) did a majority assumed she was no longer among them.
However, despite Emily being different from Christians of the time, I think she was still a believer. In the last stanza of the poem, she says she still going to heaven. If at all she was no longer religious she would not have had aspirations of making it to heaven. Emily believed that that one was not made a true believer by abiding by the norms set.
