Introduction
Fighting against the oppression that a group of people, a country or even a race demands power. It is all it takes to achieve freedom. The ability to make their voices be heard and not relenting in the course of action that they need to be considered. Just as the Mau Mau, people realize they are being oppressed by those in power and therefore demand to be respected and treated equally. It is what leads to the quest to have the power as well. The power to air their voices, to be listened to and be treated equally. The question is, how does a group use power to challenge the authority and be heard to achieve freedom? As Malcolm X indicated in his 1965 speech, the power to have freedom is what leads to peace. This paper focuses on how people can achieve their freedom by fighting for their rights and letting their voices be heard in a society that is full of oppression.
Attainment of freedom demands knowledge. The people who are being oppressed have to understand that they are being sidelined and discriminated to achieve freedom. Without knowledge, oppression still carries the day. It is the knowledge that creates the urge to spot the areas in which others are being sidelined. In 1964, the Northern Rhodesia fought colonialism to attain what is currently known as Zambia. It was only pure to come up with Zambia after the realization that indeed colonialism meant more harm than good. When the black representatives from Mississippi found themselves being closed out by the Great Society, the feeling of being unwanted struck out.

It was a piece of knowledge to them. Through the same knowledge, Nyasaland was able to become Malawi which allowed it be accepted by the United Nations. In every quest for freedom, the oppressed must know that indeed the oppressor mean no good (English & Hoffman, 100). It is the freedom that creates the peace, but it only comes when a group has the desired knowledge.
Freedom demands to protect yourselves whenever you feel you are either unjustly or immorally attacked. Those in power have always taken the advantage to brutally attack individuals claiming that they have the right to do so. However, it should not be the case. No one bears the right to shoot at one’s neighborhood, kill the occupants and walk away as if nothing happened. The riot in Harlem was orchestrated by the white police officer who was off-duty and ended up killing African American teenager. To many in the United States, the act was due to racism in which the black Americans felt they were being oppressed. It was the first race riot of its kind in the country (X & George, 74). Malcolm X indicated that it was not indeed just for the police department to apply excessive force on other neighborhoods when they couldn’t use the same in the white neighborhoods. Since the people felt that they were immorally being attacked, they resolved to riot which at some point, became a lesson for the following years.
The fight for the attainment of freedom requires accurate representation by the elected leaders. In 1964, black American electorate fully supported Lyndon to become the president with the expectation of their rights being fought for. Unfortunately, the opposite happened. It was the first support of its kind. Malcolm X said admitted that there had been no any group of people who had supported any candidate the way the black did in 1964. When the time came to fight for their rights, even Johnson himself never said anything that could change what they were going through. It is vital for any representative to represent the needs of those who elected him or her (Archibald, 50). When the oppressions are made to be known, then they can be changed. The black people expected their cries to be listened to, be recognized and be appreciated. When people are indeed represented, attainment of their freedom is inevitable since they have a voice.
Freedom demands nationalist-minded individuals to make the world understand what is going on. When the nation’s interest is not in one’s heart, fighting to achieve freedom can only prove to be a nightmare. No freedom can be attained when nobody speaks for the oppressed. Over the years, black representatives visited Africa just to end up glossing things making Africans feel that their fellows were doing alright in America. The truth is that it was never the case. No one had the oppression in their hearts and so they so no need of fighting for their fellow African Americans. Hypocrisy should not be called for in the quest for freedom (English & Hoffman, 111). The need and the urge to have the nationalist-minded individuals help in airing the problems that people go through thus leading to freedom attainment.
Counter-arguments
A nationalist-minded individual is devoted to the interests of a country as a whole and not precisely a group of people. When African Americans visited Africa, they served the interest of the whole nation and thus could not make Africa view America as it was oppressing its citizens. They could never taint the American picture but instead, serve its interests to the latter. However, what one has to understand is that serving the county’s interest should mainly be based when the country is treating its citizens equally. A nationalist-minded individual cannot claim to have the county’s interests at heart when at the back of his or her mind, other people are getting oppressed (English & Hoffman, 130). It only makes such individuals appear to be hypocrites. They seem to be no longer interested in other people’s freedom.
Freedom is not free, and it is more than just a concept. Freedom has complex interpretations and cannot be attained when no sacrifices are made. Without the black representatives being locked out by the Great Society, they could not have known that they needed their freedom. Without the African countries being colonized, they could not have realized that they needed their freedom. Finally, without the shooting in Harlem, no one could have realized that freedom to have equality among the races was necessary. As much as this is justifiable basing everything on the knowledge, one’s freedom should not be deprived just because he or she has no know-how. Freedom should not only be derived from oppression (Archibald, 64). Individuals need not be mistreated for them to demand their rights and liberation.
Conclusion
In the quest for freedom and liberation, knowledge and genuine representation are necessary. No freedom can be attained without having the voice to speak for the oppressed. It can never be achieved when no one is ready to talk and act. Even with the oppression, individuals have to understand that it is their actions that will change everything. In the spirit of Malcolm X, people should always strike to act and adapt to the new methods to attain what they want. The search for freedom requires the same. As a citizen, no determination which is strong enough can be overtaken by failure. Standing behind and doing nothing is not the solution for freedom. Even when power seems to be absolute, freedom can be attained when there is adequate knowledge.
