Presenting Problem
‘Pattie’ a 41-year-old white American male sought cognitive behavioral treatment because his academic performance in aircraft mechanics was deteriorating and his bond with his two teen children had weakened in the past weeks. Pattie explained that he had difficulty concentrating in class and his feet and hands turned cold and sweaty whenever he had to take a test or exams. He also had trouble falling asleep, and he overreacted whenever his children were at fault. Pattie hopes to learn strategies that can help him deal with the signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression ( Cully & Teten, 2008). After the treatment, he wants to be able to take his tests and exams with courage, fully concentrate and be attentive in class, fall asleep quickly and most importantly mend his relationship with his children.
Background Information
Pattie was born in the Dominican Republic where he was raised till the age of 13. He was separated from his mother at a tender age following a traumatizing divorce of his parents. His father married, and they relocated to New York with his father and stepmother when he was 13 years old. At the age of 21, he transferred to Miami where he found a job as an air dispatcher, married and had two children. Pattie’s children are now teenagers aged 15 and 16 years. He has primarily worked as an aircraft dispatcher for the last 15 years or so and is currently pursuing a degree in aircraft mechanics.
