Shakespeare’s Sonnet.
Sonnets by William Shakespeare 1609 are divided into the fair lord and the dark lady poems. The fair lord poems are the poems between 1and 126, while the dark lady poems begin from 127 to 154. Shakespeare sonnets can be addressed in different ways as some of them express love either directly or indirectly. Other sonnets emphasize on true love showing that love can bring joy to any person surrounded with misfortunes (Schiffer 9). The love poems by Shakespeare talk about a young man while others talk about a woman and her beauty. The general theme of Shakespeare’s sonnets addresses the themes of love, jealousy, greed, time and the power of poetry.
Love is the most recurring theme in the sonnets as he addresses the different kind of love which include unrequited, courtly, compassionate and sexual love. Shakespeare talks about a woman, and he compares the beauty of the woman on a summer day. He uses imagery, exaggerations to give the audience an idea and sense of how the lady resembles. In one of the sonnets; When in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes (Greenblatt 1174). William Shakespeare compares the eyes of the beloved to the sun (Schiffer 12).
The phrase I loved in the sonnet Since she whom I loved hath paid her last dept (Greenblatt 1414) is ‘a pretty spot out of doors.’ Reflecting on the theme of love. The phrase reveals the good moment loved ones spend away from the home vicinity.
