The new global economy presents the World Trade Organization with various challenges. We live in a globalized world where there are organizations that handle cross-border issues; they include the World Trade Organization (Carroll 2014). WTO is mandated to ensure that trade flows smoothly. Nonetheless, the rise of nationalist movements poses a serious threat to globalization.
The WTO protests in Seattle that happened in 1999 involved demonstrators from all walks of life who expressed their concerns about various issues including unfair trade (“This Is What Democracy Looks Like” 2011). It can be argued that the protesters were fighting for justice besides trying to protect their trading rights. It is crucial to note that social engagement is important for social change. However, nationalism poses a challenge to the effective functioning of the WTO.
The rise of nationalists in recent years poses a big challenge to international institutions including WTO. This, of course, has implications for the future of international cooperation. In the case of America, Donald Trump has been threatening to withdrawal from WTO since he was elected to office citing that the rules overseen by WTO are always against the United States (Haley 2017). President Trump should consider reforming WTO other than pulling out.
The Trump administration has been hostile to international trade agreements as they feel they interfere with the sovereignty of their nation.
Wait! Sociology Blog post paper is just an example!
Does this administration consider WTO as the worst trade deal that has ever existed? It is good to appreciate the role played by WTO in facilitating international trade. I understand that the Trump administration is planning to increase import tariffs. This move is likely to have adverse effects for both the US economy and the global economy. A rules-based global trade is imperative to the prosperity of international business. Thus, countries should join hands to support WTO reforms. My question is, does WTO undermine or strengthen the sovereignty of member states? Again, should it be reformed or disbanded?
