Sorrowful Woman
This short story is about a nuclear family where the mother experienced a difficult period due to sickness. She was suffering from a malady that would get worse whenever she saw her son play. She was deeply disturbed by her situation that she just could not stand seeing her husband and son daily. The husband and the son were so supportive in trying to restore her to her usual self. She takes an extended period to recover that is characterized by loneliness and isolation from the other family members (Godwin 4). Ultimately, she is normal again, but this is aided by her husband’s tolerant and supportive nature.
The story highlights the different roles assigned to women in the society. Women have to clean, prepare meals, and tend for their kids (Godwin 2). Men, on the other hand, are obliged to work and looking for money to manage their families. Women in this story are assigned to remain the house always. They do not go out as their husbands do daily. The story further highlights the boredom that women are confined to when they are left back at home. The woman in this story resolves to read books and combing her hair often to eradicate the feeling of loneliness.
From the story, it is evident that all people are comfortable with their roles although the husband is unusually ready to do duties that are typically assigned to women. The woman is even wowed when the husband serves her breakfast while in bed because it is unusual (Godwin 1).

The man is described as durable by the story writer. This brings itself out throughout the text as the husband is overly committed to seeing his wife through her health problems. He is supportive and ready to take up the roles that are meant to be done by women such as cooking, washing, and taking the kid to school.
The ability of the husband to adapting to the situation is critical to ensuring that the woman’s sickness does not shake the family. The family members have a good relationship with each other. The husband is ever ready to help her wife and kid through it all. Ultimately, his perseverance pays off, and the wife heals. Therefore, the acceptance of the husband to take a role that is meant to be women’s is vital is helping them overcome the hard moments.
