Personal workspace should always be organized with maximum utilization of the available space however little it is. This follows the 5 S’s used in layout and organization which are Sort, setting in order, shine, standardize and sustain. A look into my personal working space can be related to these organizational processes. Having limited space, I only keep relevant documents and files on the desk. The rest are kept in cartons in order to minimize congestion. Decluttering helps me deal with setting this in order. Occasionally, I find obsolete files lying around which tends to occupy a room that would have been put to good use. This disorganization tends to interfere with Shine, especially before things get organized. Also, the room may appear crowded due to the small space that is available. Apart from that, I maintain an updated calendar of schedules, appointments and work to be done that helps me keep things in place depending on their order of urgency. Lastly, keeping things in place can be hard hence sustenance of an organized office may be hard. Space design affects the organization of things around the office; items should be arranged in a way that conforms to the space design. Lastly, continuous evaluation of space design, personalization, and daily planning will enable space design to be effective and efficient (Cpmonesource.com, 2018).
A visit to my dentist’s office show that the 5 S’s have been closely apart for a few things that do not conform to this.

Equipment are clearly labelled and put in shelved leaving the working desk spacious, only having sticky notes, a computer and notebooks. These are things that are continuously used hence they are appropriately organized. However, there is a lot of congestion in the room with barely enough to fit more than three people. Too many items have been squeezed up in the single room including patients bed and sinks. This is something that stands out, so I’m sure they are aware of this. In my opinion, it would be best if they considered expansion of the dentist’s room for efficient utilization of space.
I have learned the importance of effective and efficient utilization of space design as well as its effect on medical care. Use of the 5 S’s helps in achieving proper organization of space. Also, I’m anticipating the assignment on floor assignment that will enable me to put my design skills to use as well as my knowledge of space design. Before, space design was of little importance to me as I wasn’t aware of its importance in healthcare as I do now, like effect on revenue and output (Alker, 2014). Therefore, optimized patient care depends on a lean workflow organization.
