Discrimination in the school environment has long since been an issue for most students, especially immigrants. It results in plenty of implications that affect the growth of an individual (Brown 1). Discrimination, if not handled, may affect a child from psychological, academic and social-emotional perspectives.

Any form of harassment including discrimination results in negative feelings in the victims in which they feel oppressed and helpless. An individual may find it difficult adjusting to the school environment when he or she feels unloved and insecure. He or she either withdraws from social life or develops a hatred for others. The withdrawal may cause one to harm oneself or cause harm to others with the view that they are protecting themselves.

Studies indicate that students who have encountered discrimination experience depression, low self-esteem and low levels of life satisfaction (Brown 8).
Discrimination, if not handled, may affect a child from an academic perspective
Poor academic performance is also affiliated with discrimination. The negative performance is characterized by poor grades, dropping out of school, not taking part in extra-curricular activities, and lack of motivation to improve one’s academic performance. The academic perspective is mostly associated with teachers who subject students to discriminatory attitudes. When a student feels that the instructor does not consider his or her interests, the best option is to try as much as possible and remain “invisible”. However, fellow students also take part in the perspective when they look down on an individual with the view that he or she is different (Brown 9). In other words, discrimination makes school unenjoyable which makes one prefer disengaging from school activities.
Discrimination, if not handled, may affect a child from a social-emotional perspective
Discrimination is associated with the development of deviant or aggressive behavior in the victims. The development of such behavior may result in long-term effects such as being expelled from school or worse, being imprisoned. As mentioned earlier, the preference to solitude for most of the victims may cause one to harm oneself or cause harm to others with the view that they are protecting themselves and hence resulting in long-term effects. Discrimination may also affect one’s social life whereby one may feel incompetent when trying to interact with others. Most of the victims withdraw from social lives due to the fear of rejection (Brown 10).

Diversity is an inevitable construct in the current world. It is present in every setting and, therefore, it has to be embraced. It is unethical to discriminate an individual based on any aspect that distinguishes him or her from others in an environment. How would you feel if you were discriminated against?
