Steps for Constructing an Argument
Over time, I have realized that I am no longer happy in a relationship with my boyfriend. Despite having constant self-reassurance for over a year that frequent conflicts emanating from the tiniest mistakes between us would eventually fade, things continue to get out of hand as days progress. Often, we fail to reach a conclusion or find solutions to the challenges we face due to our different personalities and personal preferences. In my case, I prefer to settle an issue immediately while he likes to address a problem only after it gets out of hand. This difference often makes me feel that he doesn’t give our relationship the attention it deserves and does not care about me. I will, therefore, apply the eight steps for constructing an argument as Boss explains in her book to end the unhealthy relationship for good.
The first step that I will take to develop an argument is to form a question (Boss 195). Am I happy in this relationship? Does this relationship contribute to my social and emotional growth? These issues are important because they create a platform for self-evaluation which ties with the second step of constructing an argument that involves creating a list of premises that will answer the question (Boss 195). I feel unhappy in this relationship for various reasons. First, my boyfriend does not listen to me when I try to point out a persistent problem. Second, I compromise a lot of things to avoid conflicts and try to be understanding even in unwarranted situations.

Third, I often try to console myself that the situation will improve with time. At times, I look at the relationships of my friends or just strangers and wish I had such an experience. After the self-evaluation, the third step that I will take is to eliminate any weak premises in my argument (Boss 195). If I have to approach my boyfriend, be confident and utter words that make sense. In this case, the list mentioned above is reasonable since it explains the reasons for my break-up decisions.
Therefore, the fourth step involves concluding my argument. In this case, choosing to break up with my boyfriend is a wise decision for various reasons. First, my age warrants an excellent relationship experience as a foundation of a healthy relationship in the future. Second, being in a relationship with a person who provokes negative emotions at all times can be detrimental to a person’ social life by affecting their self-esteem and confidence. Lastly, the feeling of loneliness, regret, sadness, and desperation are among the signs of being in a wrong relationship. Thus, I choose to be happy. I will then take the fifth step which is to organize my argument accordingly.
The sixth step will entail practicing the argument on a different person to weigh its effectiveness (Boss 195). I will use a close friend to state my case and get her opinion. I will report the reasons as to why I need to break up with my boyfriend and give a list of reasons for doing it. My friend should then be able to advise me on the best approach and probably add more reasons as to why I should execute my plan. The seventh step will involve revising my argument after getting an opinion from the outside. At this stage, I will be keen to eradicate any argument that indicates that my decision is irrational due to emotions.
After making sure that my argument is rational, I will take the big step of approaching my boyfriend and explaining to him why the break-up is essential. Correct execution of every step of argument construction should lead to a successful break-up with my boyfriend. He should be in a position to understand that I did not decide because of how I felt but because I had analyzed my situation carefully.
