Stereotype in the black community

Stereotyping in the Black Community. There are sections of the American population that are of the opinion that the black community should be ashamed of acting differently. The black community in America is associated with crime, rap music, and being athletes. It is challenging to the black community members to break into other forms of professions that are mostly linked to the white American community (Wood & Chasseur, 2015). This stereotyping of the black community regarding profession in mainly propagated by the media. It is because the media has neglected the role that the African Americans play in other occupations. However, members of the black community are also to be blamed towards the existence and propagation of this stereotype. They dress recklessly, speak vulgarly, and they misbehave. However, the black community themselves can do much to reduce or even eliminate this stereotyping. They can change their behaviors, change their dressing codes, and change their language for the better. Moreover, the black community can also prove to the world that they deserve other respectable jobs by working harder and believing in themselves (Adams & Stevenson, 2012).
Stereotyping in the Black Community
In the United States of America, the black community is mostly stereotyped as athletes, rappers, or even criminals. However, the majority of the African Americans are not criminals, rappers, or athletes. The media has been blamed for propagating the black community stereotyping because they have failed to focus on other forms of professions that black community dominates in the United States of America (Ahluwalia, 2014).

The black community themselves can also be blamed for propagating this stereotyping against them. Most of the black community is not speaking well, they have inappropriate dressing codes, and they are ill-mannered. The black community also has lawyers, politicians, doctors, federal agents, scientists among other respected professionals. Therefore, I have chosen this stereotyping among the black community to dispel the misleading notion regarding the perception of the American population on the professions of the black community (Adams & Stevenson, 2012).
It is essential to write about this stereotyping against the black community because there is nothing wrong with being black. Moreover, people do not choose to be born among the black community. Therefore, it is wrong to stereotype the black society based on the profession. Black is just the skin color and has little to do with the type of job reserved for individuals. There are well known black Americans who practice respectable professionals in various fields. Just to mention, there are black American politicians, doctors, businesspersons, scientists, law enforcers, among other professions. Therefore, writing about this stereotyping among the black community will assist in dispelling this misleading perception of the black community living in America (Ahluwalia, 2014).
Personally, this type of stereotyping has affected me. Being one of the members of the black community, I have been stopped on numerous occasions by the law enforcers. In all of the circumstances, they have mistaken me as a criminal. In one of the incident, they hauled me into the police car, and I was taken to the police station where I spent nearly three hours. Apart from being mistaken as a criminal, I have also lost an interview because they thought I was not good enough for the job. They disregarded my papers but focused on the color of my skin. Shockingly, one of the interviewers joked whether I could rap for them. The experiences I had from the cases mentioned above have made me understand the American community. I have come face to face with racism in the modern world. People are mostly judged based on their skin color. Unfortunately, the black community suffers most. However, the experiences have made me believe that there are possibilities if eliminating the vice in our society.
As far as critical thinking is concerned stereotyping black community in regards to their skin color is a barrier. Critically thinking, all human being is the same regardless of the race. The only different thing amongst them is the skin color. Therefore, irrespective of the race affiliation, anybody can do any jobs. Moreover, not only black community are criminals, rappers, and athletes. Other races are also rappers, athletes, and even gangsters. Therefore, stereotyping black community this manner does not only promote racism but also deny the black community the right to venture into other respectable professions. It explains why it is challenging for the black American to excel in politics, business, and education. It means that America always misses on talented individuals who can excel in various fields and improve the economy of the United States by taking it to a higher level. Therefore, it is of great importance for the Americans to think critically when dealing with such type of stereotypes. Before the almighty God, everybody is equal and such stereotypes are worth elimination (Adams & Stevenson, 2012).
I can take several steps to change the influence of this type of stereotype in my life. First, I can proudly stand for my black community by proving to the world that my skin color cannot limit my dream profession. It means that I have to work hard and deliver just like the other races in whatever I do. Secondly, I must dress and speak in a manner that can make the others respect me (Wood & Chasseur, 2015). It has been noted that the black community association with being criminals is because of their dressing codes and their use of vulgar language. Therefore, I can change that by dressing respectably and avoiding vulgar language. The third step that I can indulge in to break the stereotype in my life is to spearhead a campaign against negative media coverage regarding black community. Currently, the media only focuses black community as criminals, athletes, and rappers. The press is neglecting other respectable professions that black communities occupy. Therefore, by spearheading the campaign, I would change the perception of the world regarding the stereotyping of the black community as far as professional is concerned. Changing the world’s perception of stereotyping the black community will ultimately reduce its influence in my life (Ahluwalia, 2014).
