To determine whether a patient is suicidal, some factors such as depression are examined. A depressed client will have negative thoughts. Such patients are likely to negative and hopeless and therefore can commit suicide (Firestone, 2014). Past suicidal attempt is another indicator that the client is suicidal. If they did it once, they are likely to repeat if they experience similar conditions. Some clinical conditions trigger negative thoughts. Conditions such as psychoneuroses affect a person mood and therefore can make them have suicidal thoughts.
The first treatment for suicidal patients is teaching them how to cope with stress, depression and negative thoughts. This will enable them to gain self-esteem and therefore develop dignity. Cognitive therapy has also been found to help treat suicidal clients. This therapy helps change the client’s behavior and make it positive. Dialectical behavior therapy also helps bring about socialization (Firestone, 2014). A suicidal client gets a chance to share what they are going through, and this helps to advise them accordingly.
After providing treatment to the suicidal patients, an objective follows up should be conducted. The psychologist should organize for checkups where he or she should meet with the client and monitor their progress. This will make it possible to identify the needed management to help wipe the condition completely. The challenge that may affect the management of this condition is the social and lifestyle condition of the client (Firestone, 2014).

While the management may be comprehensive and therefore effective, the client may still be living in an environment which fosters suicidal thoughts. For instance, the patient may be living in extreme poverty, suffering from a chronic disease or experiencing stress due to domestic violence. This may hinder the patient from recovering. To mitigate these challenges, the psychologist should ensure the client is living in an environment which does not foster suicidal thoughts.
