Summary of Oversight and Investigations Hearing on Nursing
The purpose of the hearing was to determine whether the federal government is ensuring that residents of nursing homes are free from any form of abuse and are receiving the quality care they deserve. The hearing also focused on learning what the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is doing to guarantee that all states are effectively surveying nursing homes to ensure their compliance with the regulations set by the CMS. Director Goodrich affirmed that the CMS does quality and safety oversights where institutions are first surveyed before being licensed if they meet the established requirements. She stated that all nursing homes are required to have proper safety measures and ensure that they are well facilitated in case of emergencies (Oversight and Investigations Hearing on Nursing Homes). CMS is keen to address any suspected case of abuse seeing that it either cuts funding or shuts down institutions found guilty of abuse. She pointed out that another step that the CMS had taken to ensure quality care for nursing home residents is creating the National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes aimed at implementing better practices that enhance the quality of care given to people with dementia in the homes.
The Patients Over Paperwork is an implementation that ensures that nurses and care providers have more time with patients. Office of Inspector General affirmed to continue to assess CMS oversight and nursing home and State Agency performance, monitor the impact of program changes, and use the enforcement tools to address misconduct to protect residents of nursing homes.

Nursing homes were advised to improve on the nurse staffing, and HHS confirmed that it agreed with the implementation of gathering the staff information based on payroll and other verifiable data which ensures the security of nursing homes.
