Telehealth allows the administration of healthcare services through remote digital platforms. The innovation of telemedicine has proved useful as a mean of care provision in Veteran Affairs (VA) medical centers. Particular aspects of the telehealth innovation have been the “clinical video telehealth” (CVT), “care coordination store-and-forward” plans, and home telehealth. CVT technology supports remote face-to-face engagement between “clinical pharmacy specialists” (CPSs) and patients in remote local VA clinics. Usually, the CPSs are professionals with high qualifications and scarce to be present in various VA clinics. As such, the CVT technology offers a platform for local clinics (through “primary care supports”) to organize and facilitate patients to have sessions with CPSs. Veterans can also access pharmacy and drug services from the comfort of their homes through telephone calls, video conferencing, emails, and prompt secure messaging (home telehealth techniques). The “care coordination store-and-forward” entails the primary providers in the local VA medical centers diagnose, record health information of patients, and store in the format that remote CPSs can access when necessary (Perdew, Erickson & Litke, 2017).
Telehealth has many advantages that encourage is exploration and use. One of the benefits is the reduction or elimination of the need to travel.
