As the first president of Texas elected in 1836, Sam Houston found Texas in a lot of problems including a debt of $1.25million. His effort to offset the debt included sending his army home to cut on cost, increasing the amount of taxes collected, and selling of the state’s lands to gather more money. Secondly, he tried to find a peace treaty between the Native Americans and the Anglo settlers. As the first president, he tried to make his nation grow by first eliminating the hatred between the two groups. Additionally, he tried to keep the peace between the Mexican government and Texas government thorough a treaty. However, the Mexican government did not show interest in it. After his efforts failed in paying the debt and reconciling the two fighting groups, the president started seeking help from the United States opting to become annexed to them.
President Lamar had a rather different approach to solving the problems facing Texas. To solve the financial problem facing the country, he decided to print more money. The money was used to call back the army. He tried to solve the problem between Texas and Mexico by trying to capture the San Fe city of Mexico. This was after his trial as a diplomat who wanted Mexico to recognize Texas as an independent country. Unlike Houston who wanted Texas to be annexed to the United States, Lamar wanted to make Texas an independent country. In fact, his dream was to extend the country to reach the Pacific Ocean.

As his great achievement in saving Texas State, he introduced a policy which required every county to have a school, therefore, promoting education. However, Lamar increased Texas debt to over $ 7million.
