The benefit of having a walking distance grocery store around The University of Maryland College Park
A grocery refers to a place where food is bought. It can be a food store, a marketplace or a supermarket. Foods which are always sold in the groceries include eggs, beans, green vegetables, milk, fruits, and some pre-prepared foods among many others. The University of Maryland, College Park is located in Prince George’s County. It is the largest university in this region and has a student population of approximately 39,000 students. City Park is one of the food deserts in Prince George’s County. It means that more food stores are located away from residential areas. University students and residents of College Park face problems when visiting food stores when they don’t own a personal car. This makes it important for the availability of a grocery near the residents. Living a walking distance away from the grocery has many benefits some of which are discussed below.

It saves time
Since university students have long working hours. This is shown by many lectures they attend, many assignments they are given and also the research they carry out while studying. The time saved here is then used to perform other tasks, for example doing a takeaway assignment or research which in turn will lead to academic excellence in their areas of specialization.
It is convenient
Since students have many activities to perform during the day. Sometimes they may get tired when they arrive at their residents from the university. When such a case happens, a student can walk to the grocery and buy already cooked food, for example, mashed potatoes or chicken (Donovan, 2016). This will save him/her when he/she had a lot of work and is feeling hungry and tiresome. In this particular day, a student will relax then do other tasks.
Important when carrying out meetings and having parties.
Students sometimes have important meetings and parties. When having such meetings and parties, students can have them carried out in the nearby food groceries where they can chat over a cup of coffee or eat foods which have already been prepared (Guelph, 2014). Drinks are also available in these groceries. When they are throwing a party in their residence, they can easily visit the grocery and buy the drinks and food depending on what they need. They can also have with them disposable plates, cups, and spoons for use during the party.
A good way to know people
When visiting the groceries, students make new friends as they buy the products. During this activity, they also get to know the behavior and nature of the people they live with at their residences.
Healthy lifestyle
Those people who live walking distance away from the food and are most likely to be healthy compared to those who live far away from the grocery. This is because those living near the grocery have easier access to a variety of foods which are rich in nutrients thereby having a meal made up of a balanced diet. In the long run, such a student will live a healthier life and carry own his/her academic activities efficiently leading to success.
In events when new products have been introduced in the food industry let us say through technology and innovations, students living near the groceries will be the first to identify new products and taste them (Wein, 2009). Those living near food stores also have an advantage because they will be able to talk with sellers who will inform them on how they prepare particular food substances and their ingredients which will further help them when determining the value of a particular food substance.
Fresh products
In local groceries, farmers bring their products when they are fresh. Some of these products include but are not limited to meat, chicken, cheese, bread among many others. When students eat fresh products they are not likely to contract diseases which are transmitted through contaminated food products since the time required for transportation is short, and the food products are always fresh (Alakaam, 2016).
In some groceries, live fish, chicken, and rabbits are sold. For example, livestock may be slaughtered, skinned, cut into pieces then packaged for the customer while he or she is seeing. In this case, the products are very fresh, and the customer can determine the level of cleanliness of the person selling the products. In this case, the quality and freshness of the products are high. When students eat such products, they will live healthier lives and work hard at the university.
Learning new ideas
When friends visit a grocery together, they may discuss the importance of eating a particular food, for example, they can talk about advantages of eating green vegetables about our body’s immunity.
Conclusively, having a grocery near the college has helped most students because when new products have been introduced in the food industry, the students will be the first people to see. In addition, the grocery will produce fresh products to the students, thus most of them will be healthier without complications. Students living near food stores also have an advantage because they will be able to talk with sellers who will inform them on how they prepare particular food substances and their ingredients which will further help them when determining the value of a particular food substance.
