The rate of criminal activities has been skyrocketing in the past decade, and this has threatened the safety of people in society amidst the growing number of firearms in circulation. This has bolstered the increase in gun violence cases, and law enforcement agencies have been unable to combat crime fully despite the various mitigations plan put in place. Moreover, the police department and other agencies are not well equipped when it comes to tackling corruption in the society. This is because the resources are stretched, and the available police officers are by far outnumbered by the criminals and the people they are supposed to protect are also too many for the law enforcement agencies (Drake, 2007). It becomes impossible to ensure the security of the civilians, and this gives leeway for the implementation of self-defense laws in the country.
I agree with the author’s statement that the stand your ground laws are necessary especially in this age when guns have become part and parcel of the society. The legislation implemented in various states in America has given the people power to protect themselves in the presence of imminent danger without the fear of prosecution. Such a move is needed in instances where police are unable to respond quickly and the stand your ground laws will fill the gap and will help the people to take matters in their own hands and be part of the solution to eradicate insecurity and violence in the community (Drake, 2007).

Therefore, self-defense provision of the constitution gives the city the opportunity to take an active role in ensuring safety and security in light of the increasing crime rates. Furthermore, such statutes are embedded in the constitution and to some point they can be considered a tool of empowering the society.
