Fulfillment of Leopold’s Quest for Recognition
The book “The history of love” comprises of three interesting stories. Leopold Gursky dominates the first story. Leopold Gursky hails from Poland, and he is the first person to write the book “The history of love.” He dedicates the book to Alma Mereminski, the lady he loves. Leopold Gursky’s friend from Poland called Litvinoff dominates the second story. Litvinoff travels to South America in possession of the book that Leopold Gursky wrote. While in South America, Litvinoff meets Rosa. Litvinoff thinks that Leopold Gursky is dead. Therefore, he confidently claims the ownership of the book as he hands it over to his wife (Krauss 23). Rose and her husband Litvinoff translate the book from Yiddish to Spanish. They later publish the book bearing Litvinoff’s name. David Singer and his family take the third story. David Singer is impressed by the book “The history of love” that he found in a store. He takes the book to Charlotte who is his wife. Their first child is named Alma, the name of the lady in the book (Krauss 41). The essay will discuss the fulfillment of Leopold Gursky’s Quest for recognition. Leopold Gursky thinks that he will die having not left anything that can prompt people to remember him. However, he later learns that he has a legacy that people will always remember.
Leopold Gursky is a man from Poland. After the World War II, he migrates to New York. He follows his love, the lady by name Alma Mereminski.

Leopold learns that Alma Mereminski is married to another man. He decides not to love any other lady in his life. Leopold Gursky has written the book “The history of love” that he dedicates to his love Alma Mereminski (Krauss 57). Leopold loses copy of that book. To him, he thinks he has lost everything. While living in New York City, Leopold Gursky finds himself stressed. In his apartment, he gets shocked after realizing that he is no longer visible to the world. The lady he wished to marry left him and the son of Alma Mereminski doesn’t know if Leopold exists. When he reflects on his life, he concludes that there is nothing that can be left of him once he dies. The old man Leopold decides to do whatever possible so that he can be recognized. He volunteers to be a nude model so that he can be seen.
The book “The history of love” that Leopold Gursky wrote, lands on hands of his friend Litvinoff. With the help of his wife Rose, Litvinoff translates the book from Yiddish to Spanish. He inserts his name on the published copy claiming possession of the book. Litvinoff assumes that Leopold Gursky died during World War II. The book is found by David Singer in a store. David Singer finds it useful and gives it to Charlotte, his wife. Their first born girl is given the name of the girl called Alma in the book. Unfortunately, David Singer dies leaving Charlotte lonely. Alma Singer sympathizes with her mother’s situation and decides to look for a man who can love her mother (Krauss 64). Alma Singer takes the opportunity of her mother’s translation job to look for a man. Every time they do a translation, Alma Singer inserts a love letter in each translated copy unless she forgets.
Alma Singer’s problem is not to be seen or recognized; her main problem is finding comfort for her mother. Alma Singer discovers many things while looking for a man to join her mother. She realizes that she was named after a woman who Leopold Gursky loved. Alma Singer’s mother receives a letter from Jacob Marcus requesting translation of “The history of love” from Spanish to English. Alma decides to look for Jacob Marcus. Based on the information she has concerning Jacob Marcus, She realizes that the woman in the book by the name Alma Mereminski is real. She is set to find this lady. Alma Singer gets disappointed when she realizes that the lady she is looking is dead. However, she came to know that a famous writer called Isaac Moritz is Almas Berlinski’s son. In the process of her search, Alma Singer finds that Isaac is also dead. She leaves a letter that queries who is the real author of the book “The history of love.” Bernard finds a letter to Isaac that was left by Alma Singer. He decides to call, but he finds Bird, brother to Alma Singers. It is at this time when Bird is informed that Isaac was the son of Leopold. Leopold tries to find a copy from Isaac’s house, but he didn’t get (Krauss 79). Surprisingly Leopold appears in magazine attached to Isaac’s last work.
At this time, Leopold Gursky is fighting to leave a legacy before he dies. When Alma Mereminski got married, Leopold decided not to marry, therefore at his old age, he finds himself lonely and depressed. He does awkward things for people to recognize him. He feels that nobody who knows him. This prompts him to carry with him a note explaining who he is in case he dies. The struggle of Alma Singer to find the original author of the book “The history of love” leads her to Leopold Gursky. In the end, Alma Singer and Leopold meet. Leopold narrates his life to Alma Singer and how he lost the book “The history of love.” Alma Singer asks Leopold if he ever loved a lady by the Name Alma Mereminski (Krauss 81). This time Leopold realizes that people recognize him and his quest for recognition is fulfilled. And therefore, he has a legacy that will prompt people remembered him forever.
