The theory deals with the benefits of improving the independence of the patients in the healthcare so that they can recover from their illness as fast as possible. The Henderson’s theory also makes emphasis on the needs of the patients and how the nurses intervene to meet these needs. The assumptions made in this theory are that the nurse should be taking care of the patient to the point where they can take care of themselves (“Virginia Henderson’s Nursing Theory”, 2012). It is also assumed that the patient normally wants to be healthy, the nurses are also willing to assist the patients both day and night and also it is assumed that an individual’s mind can’t be separated from the body since they relate to each other. The major concepts include human, environment, nursing, and health.
The theory was brought about by the recovery state of the patients after they get out of the hospital and the duties performed by the nurse (“Virginia Henderson – Nursing Theory”, 2016). The theorist realized that there are better ways in which the nurses can hasten the recovery of the patient and make them independent after they get out of the hospital. The theory was based on the needs of the patients in the hospitals and the interventions found in the hospital. The theorist also used the emotional, physical and the mental components to come up with the theory.
The theory is useful since it makes the nurses advance on the way they are taking care of the patients to a point where the patients can easily take care of themselves.

It also motivates the patients to be independent once they are out of the hospital. The weakness of this theory is that there is no explanation concerning a dying patient and how the nurses can give such patients a peaceful death (Vera, 2014).
