Walmart Company Ethics
In any business venture, the most critical determinant of a company’s progress is the ability to uphold and operate within the scope of business ethics. Founded by Sam Walton and characterized as a top performing company by Revenue, Walmart is a multinational enterprise involving department stores, hypermarkets and grocery stores. As such it has numerous entities incorporated in making it a successful plan, and therefore good business ethics are highly desirable and are crucial to its future performance.
In 2008, Walmart company revised their ethical and environmental laws and introduced policies that required its suppliers to allow outside audits in addition to carrying out their operation within the social and ecological ethical standards. Rosenbloom states that Walmart company has received several criticisms from its customers and employees over mistreatment claims of its workers in America and tendency to ignore ethical violations that took place within the company’s branch outside America. In 2012, Walmart faced several bribery scandals and allegations of corporate misdeeds. On April 2012, Walmart faced accusations from the media concerning the bribery case between the company and the Mexican government that resulted in the company taking charge of building permits within the country (Thau).
McGee states that Walmart is ranked as the highest performing online retail market in the United States regarding its Gross Domestic Product.

However, in 2005 and 2013, the company was ranked among the worst performing enterprises with regards to adherence to the ethical business laws. In response to the public outcry, the company has so far initiated programs that have seen it rise as a dominant online retail company both in revenue and general business conduct.
According to numerous reviews by previous employees, almost all commend the pay and working conditions but mention the bad reputation of the upper-level management consisting of the CEO, the directors as well as some stakeholders in the company. The branch managers running the stores out of America have also been accused of ignoring sexual, discrimination and several other unethical practices in their respective branches. The procurement offices, on the other hand, have faced several allegations of approving suppliers who have records of illegal dealings and unethical practices.
In conclusion, Walmart has been facing several ethical malpractices allegations with their leaders being unable to attend to the unethical claims. However, the company’s top management in response to the increasing public and employees outcry have initiated new policies that will see the company operate within strict ethical laws and practices.
