War photographer: James Nachtwey
James Nachtwey is the extraordinary war photographer portrayed in the 2002 award-winning documentary directed by Christian Frei. The character is one who is gripping portrait somber at the same time. Nachtwey is globally considered one of the best war photographers of these times and at the same time the most fearless one. He has been to some of the most dangerous regions in the world including Kosovo, Rwanda, Indonesia and many other countries that have experienced terrible wars. If your pictures are not good enough then that means you are close enough to the subject”, these are Robert Capa’s words, a pioneering photojournalist that is used to introduce the film. Hence, what makes Nachtwey one of the world’s best war photographer is the fact that he finds himself just at the focal point of the caption that is away from any deadly situations in the wars.
In an interview with his colleagues by CNN, Nachtwey displays a profile of an artist who is profoundly humanistic and in spite of everything that he has witnessed, he is still idealistic and retains that extraordinary belief that images have the ability to communicate to people the truth about his world, hence, their ability to put an end to war (Fox). Majority of Nachtwey images are captions of poverty, war, grief, and devastations that the individuals undergo. In the film, the director follows the pioneering photojournalist Capa and realizes that some of the events that his camera could not capture were captured by the tiny micro camera that Nachtwey installed above his camera.

Nachtwey carries himself in a mild-mannered way, a man who is introspective and does not shy away from others’ sufferings.
