What Are the Environment Roles in Personality Development?
An individuals personality is what distinguishes them from other people. Personality is a mental characteristic, and that means all the patterns of thought and emotions that cause different people do or say things in specific ways. It is a dynamic but organized set of features that is possessed by an individual that affect their motivations behavior and cognition. Personality is influenced by environmental factors. Friends, family, culture, associates and other factors shape someone’s character (McCrae et al. 173) The environment affects people in a significant way. The place where they live and the people who they interact with them every day has a large part to play in determining what they become in the future. Church, family, and friends determine personality. The aim of this paper is to discuss the environment roles in personality development.
There are negative influences the environment can have on personality. Child abuse, poverty, volatile home life, permissive and authoritarian parents are some of the negative environmental factors that can cause developing behavioral disorders among children. An individual can produce feelings of inferiority if they are ridiculed due to their behavior, body size or other features (Srivastava et al. 1041). Peers can also influence personality, where primarily they engage in risky behavior such as drug and substance abuse, teenage sex and others.

These experiences can change a person’s personality due to their interaction with such environments resulting in personality disorders. Children who originate from violent families tend to also be violent and aggressive in the future (Nevid 81)
On the other hand, a nurturing and caring environment results in the development of a strong personality that is tender and caring towards other people. Children who come from stable families and who are complimented and liked for who they tend to have high self-esteem, thereby affecting who they become in the future (Caspi et al. 62).
In conclusion, the environment plays a crucial role in determining one’s personality. The behavior of parents, siblings, teachers, peers and other persons determine how we view ourselves and the world. Children can develop abnormal personality behaviors due to the negative influences in the childhood. On the other hand, a healthy environment produces people with strong personalities.
