What Did Liberty Mean to The Colonies/ Colonists?
To the colonists, liberty meant the ability to trade with other nations. They also considered liberty to be the ability to violate the law. Additionally, liberty to them meant the free movement of people and goods. They moved across borders with their goods to conduct trade in total violation of the law. The colonists used their liberty for the benefit of Great Britain. Additionally, liberty to them meant the ability to dominate social and economic life. The colonists owned large plantations and estates which were consolidated.
Conversely, liberty to the colonies meant freedom from forced labour and slavery. They also wanted to be allowed to own land. The colonies believed that freedom was their right. As a result, they fought violently to achieve it. They wanted to reclaim their land and their freedom to own property. They also wanted the freedom to express themselves and determine their political system and leadership freely. During the colonial times, government leadership was decided by the Britain king on behalf of the colonies. The colonies, therefore, wanted to be the determinants of their government structure. Additionally, the colonies wanted the liberty to practise their culture with no interference.
In conclusion, the colonists and the colonies had conflicting interests in protecting their liberty. For each of these two categories of people, liberty meant different things.
