What is culture?
Culture has many meanings. Mathew Arnolds’ Culture and Anarchy refer to culture as special intellectual endeavors while Edard Tylor’s Primitive Culture refers to culture as quality possessed by all people in social groups. For anthropologists, culture is the full range of learned human behavior patterns. Characteristics of culture include the fact that culture manifests itself by observation, values and basic assumptions. Observable facts include everything from the physical layout, dress code and the manner in which people address each other. To understand the culture, it is vital to delve into underlying assumptions. These assumptions are learned responses that originated as espoused values.
Second is that culture affects behavior and its interpretations. To this end, certain aspects of culture are physically visible while its meaning is invisible.
