Abstract
Many drivers have been the cause of many deaths that have been occurring on a daily basis. Many of this deaths usually happen at night since those drivers take alcohol after their jobs. Several severe accidents occurred in many countries where many people lost their lives while others are being injured and left disabled for the rest of their life. There are stories that I have personally experienced that make me too highly condemn the drunk drivers. Facts and statistics that many researchers have posted in different online websites also insist in making the law for drunk drivers to be stricter. The government has also introduced new laws while introducing some more to the drunk drivers in ensuring that those who are caught drunkard are being punished. This will highly discourage the use of excessive alcohol to drivers thus minimizing the impacts that are being caused by them.
Why Laws Should Be Stricter To Drunk Drivers
Drunk drivers have been causes of deaths all over the world. To prevent the occurrences of this deaths, various laws have been passed and implemented especially against drunk drivers behind the wheel. These drunk drivers behind the wheel put the life of the passengers and the other road users at the risk of losing their lives, and others left disabled. According to (“Drunk driving statistics,” 2016), many accidents have been happening at night as many people get drunk after jobs.
Wait! why laws should be stricter on drunk drivers paper is just an example!
Many of those accidents are very fatal wherein many of them all victims lost their lives or become disabled in the rest of their lives. I support the laws to be stricter to the drunk drivers who always care less about their life and the lives of others. The thesis of this argumentative essay is that the law against the drunk drivers should be stricter than they are today.
In one of the stories about the drunk drivers, one driver who was totally drunk caused a ghastly car crash that resulted in loss of a passenger who was celebrating his in the early hours at around 4.25AM. (“Horrific pictures of car with its roof ripped off in drunk-drive crash which killed man as he celebrated birthday,” 2016), states that a 31 years old Hague Lap parade met his accidental death as the driver crashed his minivan into a truck at East Flatbush, 1304 Utica Avenue. The driver of the truck, who by then was 34 years old, was arrested and charged with drunk driving among other charges like manslaughter. On arrival of emergency workers at the spot, they took the victim to the hospital but unfortunately they lost him on arrival. The two deaths were, as a result, drunk driving. The driver disrespected the laws governing the driving of vehicles, especially through ignorance that the laws are not stricter to drivers like him.
Through the effects of the story, the laws governing drunk driving should be made stricter to assist in reducing the number of calamities resulted by drunk drivers. According to (“Should drunk driving laws to be stricter?”, 2016), it has been experienced in most countries across the world, drunk driving leads to loss of many innocent people and leaving others crippled, but the penalties are mild. This makes the reckless drunk drivers continue with the same behavior as the fines are favorable once caught. As we know that safety is a key issue to human life and nobody has a right to deny it from the others but with drunk drivers, they put everyone at that risk. From these considerations, the drunk drivers should, therefore, be subjected to tougher and stricter laws to count them responsible for the loss they make on the roads and also to be seriously punished accordingly.
It is also accountable from the story and as a matter of the fact that great losses occur due to drunk driving which is as a result of ignorance of the laws. For instance, the vehicles that get involved in the accidents causes an economic loss of the assets like the vehicles themselves. According to (“Traffic Safety Facts, 2010 Data: Young Drivers1”, 2014), the vehicle owners moves an economical step back as most of the involved vehicles are never recovered. This loss could be catered for if the laws governing the vehicle driving were made stricter for the drivers so that they don’t take it easy as they do obviously due to minimal penalties to those caught driving while drunk. It should be so strict that any driver who drives under the effect of liquor gets a severe punishment to make them respect the value of the life of the passengers and other road users.
This fact has been confirmed by the statistics done by the USA in 2011 which shows that over 9000 people died in crashes caused by drunk driving, of which 100 were children of 14 years old and below. According to (“Drunk driving statistics,” 2016), these fatal crashes were 4.5 times increase at night as compared to those happen day time. The drunk drivers who got involved in these fatal crashes rose to 15% during official days of the week while those involved during the weekend were twice many standing at 31%.
Total fatalities Alcohol-related fatalities
Year Number Number Percent
200741,059 15,387 37
200837,261 13,846 37
200933,808 12,744 38
201032,885 10,228 31
2011 32,367 9,878 38
As analyzed in the table above, drunk drivers who get behind the wheel ranked the highest, due to disobedience of the laws behind them, and therefore calling for the need to enforce stricter laws to those who take alcohol and drive. According to (Shawn, 2016), in recent times it has revealed that over four million drivers drive vehicles under the effect of liquor which makes them fail to safe drive and cause accidents.
According to (“Traffic Safety Facts, 2010 Data: Young Drivers1”, 2014), the USA, economic cost of the vehicle, crashes in the year 2010, was estimated to $277 billion, of which $49.8 billion was as a result of driving under alcohol influence. These economic costs included loss of workplace, lost productivity, medical costs, and property damage among others to those who happen to be victims. However, these costs do not capture the value of intangible lost life-quality to serious injuries and these deaths resulting from the accidents. In the USA as the value of life was brought to an estimate in 2010, the harm to the society summed up to $870.8 billion, from the crashes of the motor vehicle of which $206.9 billion of it was as a result of drunk driving. If therefore drunk driving is made stricter these great losses of lives and assets may not occur.
In conclusion, because the drunk drivers have caused negative impacts in the whole world, laws that are there should be modified and made stricter than before. Also for the nations where these laws are not enforced against drunk drivers are encouraged to introduce and enforce them in a stricter way. Many have lost their breadwinners, their beloved ones, and also they have left many people who were born able to become disabled and start being dependents. Nations have also lost important people who could have done a lot especially in the contribution to the growth of the economy of a country, but they lost them through fatal accidents caused by these drunk drivers. The government should therefore strictly emphasize on this law that no drunk driver will just leave unpunished. Many properties and especially assets have also been lost in such accidents, contributing to the economic drawback of the companies and country at large. Actions must be taken before such drivers continue to cause these accidents where the results are invertible to the victims. One person should not cost the loss of lives of innocent people.
