In the Oct 15th, 2015, New York Times Magazine article “Why tipping is Wrong,” Op-ed contributor Saru Jayaraman uncovers the reasons against tipping and efforts to counter the act. First, Jayaraman expresses the efforts made by certain personalities against tipping which has caused the wage system both economically and socially which is termed as two-tiered. For instance, she points out the effort by various investors to discourage the act through an announcement made by Danny Meyers a restaurateur in New York to end tipping in his restaurants. Later she addresses a speech by Andrew M. Cuomo last month which portrayed his support for minimum wage for all State staff workers in New York, whereby she states that most restaurant workers will continue to suffer because of the tipping act. Secondly, Jayaraman tries to explain how tipping started in the USA in the 19th century as a result of experiments by the American travelers who acquired the tipping knowledge from Europe. Thirdly, the author points out about the past article published in the 19th century, whereby the author expresses that tipping caused discrimination to workers through skin color since it was regarded to be preserved for “negroes.” Next, Jayaraman acknowledges that a revolution to discourage tipping in the USA started at the end of the 19th century to advocate for workers’ pay to be done by employers. The author continues to explain that wage laws came into effect in 1938 in the USA under the labor union to control the minimum wages for tipped workers.

Lastly, the author points out a study of various amendments that have happened as the years proceeded, for instance, she points out that in 1966 the subminimum wage was set at $2.13 an hour within seven states for almost a quarter century. Later she points out that due to the heated campaign in New York in 2011, the minimum wage hiked to $5 an hour with an expected rise to $7.50 in 2015. In conclusion, Jayaraman closes by presenting a claim that for equality of women and progressivism to be experienced the unfair system of tipping should be eradicated.
