Week 4 4335: Discussion Response
Hello, Jerome!
Good post indeed sniffing is a process for capturing traffic sent between two systems but it is not only limited to capturing data only. Sniffing is also used in monitoring such traffics in a network and is typically a good tool preferred by administrators to control traffic in a network. However, the choice of the topic you selected that is collapse does not indicate what the post is all about at a glance. I think, choosing a topic like hacking or ethical hacking might have had a different impact since it gives a general idea of what the post might be about at a glance. In addition to a sniffer being a packet-capturing or frame capturing, it might also comprise of a hardware or software which is installed in the network to carry out the intended purpose. Sniffers can be customized in any desired form by adding various features such that it only filters and captures the required information. Indeed, sniffing as a tool could easily be exploited by malicious people as you have mentioned, and as such regulations should be put in place to ensure that such risks are minimized. In tackling the types of sniffing, you have made the distinction between the two quite well. In addition to what you have talked about in active sniffing, as usually used in a switch-based network is to define what a switch means? A switch is a device that regulates data flow from point to point in a network.
Wait! wk 4 4335 paper is just an example!
Also, passive sniffing captures data of traffic in non-switched networks through the hub. I commend you for providing solutions on how to mitigate against sniffing such as only using trusted Wi-Fi networks. The post not only provides a better understanding of sniffing as a hacking tool but also on how not to be a victim of sniffing.
