Brief history and the main volleyball rules

It is a very popular sport, both in men and women. He is also Olympic and his World Cups are followed by thousands of people. Some only say ‘volleyball’ and in English it is ‘volleyball’. What should we know about the volleyball rules? With a brief summary of its most important guidelines we can see a game or even encourage us to play it.

Brief History of Volleyball

The volleyball dates from the same time as basketball and its origin is quite similar since it developed thanks to a teacher and coach of the Christian Association of Young (YMCA). It was 1895 when William George Morgan saw that his students needed physical activity for cold winter days in Massachusetts.

This is how an alternative to the sport devised by one of his companions – basketball, which was created in 1891 by James Naismith – thought that it could be practiced both by young people and by adults in closed spaces as a gym.

To be able to create volleyball, Morgan ‘borrowed’ rules of other sports and techniques that he already knew and explained them to his students. In this way, the students exercise even the coldest days. A year later, in 1896, this new discipline was publicly presented, which was quickly adopted by other Christian associations.

The volleyball at the beginning was only practiced by men, but soon the female version was created. In 1947 the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was created and two years later the first Male World Volleyball Championship was held.

In 1952 the Women’s World Cup was held for the first time. The discipline joined the Olympic Games in the 1996 Atlanta edition.

What are the main volleyball rules?

Now that you know a little about the history of this sport, the next step is to learn about the volleyball rules, at least the most important. Thus, the next time you watch a television game (or live) you can understand when it is a point, when it is missing and when a game is won:

  1. The game area is rectangular and is formed by a field of 18 x 9 meters and a free space around, where you can also play the ball. In addition the place where the party takes place must have a height of at least 7 meters. In the middle of the field a network is located, which is 2.43 meters high for male matches and 2.24 meters for female.
  2. The teams are formed by 12 players of which 6 are in the field and the rest must remain sitting on the bench. Each team has a libero and a captain. Three players are placed in front of the network (attack zone) and three in the defense zone. The players make a rotation following an order in the direction of the clock hands. Thus, the player of position 2 rotates to position 1 and performs the serve; The player in position 1 passes to position 6, the one from position 6 to 5 and so on.
  3. The matches are played at the best of five sets and at 25 points each set (except for the last one that is 15). To win a set there must be a two -point difference with the opponent, for example 23 to 23. The same on the fifth set: 15 to 13. The points are recorded in different ways, for example when after the kick the ball leaves ‘long’ and pica outside the playing field, it is a point for the opposite team. If after the three touches allowed by the ball, the ball passes to the opposite field and this splices inside the field (inside the lines) is a point for the attacker. The team that marks a point is the one that performs the following serve.

Finally, within the volleyball rules we cannot forget the faults: these are sanctioned for example when a team gives more than three touches to the ball, when the network or rods are touched and this interferes with the game or when there is aRotation error.
