Human Environmental Interactions in South Asia
Due to increased industrial activity, South Asia is among the most polluted regions of the world. Air pollution is recognized as being a critical health concern for the region, with millions of people being exposed to poisoned air on a daily basis. Pollution is mainly the result of the burning of biomass and fossil fuels as a result of human activities. Recognized as being among the most industrialized regions of the world, South Asia has lagged in the implementation of legislation that can aid in curbing industrial pollution. In addition to industrial activity, the burning forest cover to find room for real estate has also been identified as a major contributor to pollution in South Asia.
The key adverse effects of pollution in South Asia are the health risks associated with heavily polluted air. At least 30% of all deaths related to air pollution take place in Asia. Air pollution also leads to acidification, when chemicals get mixed with rainwater and cause harm to vegetation and buildings. Excessive air pollution, as is common n Asia is also associated with eutrophication, which is the accumulation of pollutants in the soil, resulting in a loss in fertility. Air pollution is also associated with the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that among other things leads to global warming. Global warming results in an increase in temperatures that can lead to lethal heatwaves. Some heatwaves have, for example, been recorded in India that has led to hundreds of deaths.

Environmental pollution as a result of human activities in South Asia significantly impacts the quality of life in the region and has long-term implications on the different environmental variables.
