A Relative History of Rocks: Minnesota
The rock formation process in Minnesota began 3600 million years ago (Olakangas and Matsch 23). The first rocks developed from the ancient ocean and formed the Superior Craton. The craton later developed into the Canadian Shield. However, the underlying gneiss rocks in the region are believed to have formed a billion years earlier deep in the ocean.
Formation of sedimentary rocks began 2000 million years ago when the land ascended above the water. Minerals with high iron content collected on the shores to form the Cuyuna, Mesabi, and Vermilion iron ranges (Minnesota Department of Mineral Resources). The crust was then broken by a series of faults thereby forming a rift basin filled with sediments. The materials of the melted mantle were then to the surface as the crust was considerably thin. The melted materials resulted in the formation of volcanic rocks. Later the volcanism ceased and the rift basin was filled with sedimentary rocks. Finally, the crust fractured into two plates and a new oceanic crust was developed.
Timeline of the earth’s relative and absolute history
Green Island Reef (1990s): most of the corals on the green Island developed in the 1990s. Aronson (116) attributes the formation of the corals is attributed to various human activities in the region.
Mount Agung volcanic eruption (2017): In late 2017, Mount Agung located on Bali Island in Indonesia erupted five-time disrupting communication and transportation system.

Hawaii Kilauea volcano (2018): In May 2018, massive volcanic fissures opened on Hawaii’s Big Island. The lava ascended 300 feet into the air. As a result, hundreds of residents were forced to vacate their homes.
Haiti earthquake (2010): A 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, killing more than 300000 people. The earthquake was attributed to the shifting of the Caribbean tectonic plate.
