Introduction
The novel Hounds of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle uses suspense to deliver a captivating narrative. The author is quite effective in the formulation of an atmosphere of suspense and mystery (Doyle 1). A series of techniques are utilized to accomplish this style. In this regard, he uses techniques such as pacing, evasive language, and red herrings, to present suspense.
The application of varying pace helps in the establishment of a suspense. For instance, in chapter 9, the changing length of sentences aid in maintaining a varied pace. In this regard, short paragraphs and sentences raise the pace, which helps to increase suspense. Additionally, when the Watson and baronet receive the screams of the Hound of the Baskervilles, Baronet yells asking Watson what it was but he responded that he did not know (Doyle 10). Furthermore, the long paragraphs and sentences reduce the pace, which provides more details and depth hence reducing suspense. For instance, when Baronet questions Watson what he understands about the hound.
Moreover, the evasive language is utilized in the novel to generate suspense. For instance, Sherlock speaks of his nicotine desires. He notes that he wishes for “some,” he desires for “some,” but no one is willing to sell or give him “any”. As a result, it generates a suspense, which indicates something illegal or more potent than a cigarette. Therefore, it could be other drugs such as cocaine or heroin (Doyle 30).

Furthermore, Sherlock explained that he craved for something approximately seven percent more potent than Mrs Hudson’s tea. In the story, most of the hints Watson and Holmes identify are red herrings, which are real indications of mystery solving while others are not. For instance, when Mrs Barrymore is crying it develops suspense particularly because Mr Barrymore was the latest individual to meet Sir Charles (Doyle 45). However, her sorrows have to obstruct her run-away criminal brother.

Hounds of Baskervilles use different styles in order to deliver suspense. Precisely the author used red herring, pacing, and evasive language to create suspense in the novel.
