Developing a Practical Theory on Plagiarism
Literature has been in a plundered state for a much extended period. In the book “The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism” Jonathan Lethem discusses various artist, authors, writers and songwriters who have directly borrowed from other sources to enhance their works. This article will discuss the steps that the authors should follow beyond the cut and paste mechanism to facilitate quality and realistic content. Furthermore, the article will provide a sample of content from authors Steven Johnson’ “The Myth of Ant Queen,” Ethan Watters’ “The Mega-Marketing of Depression in Japan,” and Jonathan Lethem’s “The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism.”
Firstly, the author Jonathan Lethem perceives culture as a free perceiving gift. In his book “The Ecstasy of Influence,” the author describes borrowing as a major determinant that enhances creativity. Jonathan Lethem cited many works of his predecessor artist work. His essay contained more than 50 paraphrased article from predecessor artist; Jonathan Lethem gives credit to the authors using footnotes. Besides, the author created an open source project so that film-makers can use his work to enhance their creativity. Jonathan Lethem created licenses for the work to discourage copyright infringement. According to Jonathan Lethem, is there any basis for classifying artistic work as inspiration, even if the work is obtained from an online source? Many artists don’t start their artwork from scratch.
Wait! How should artistry go beyond cut-and-paste process to develop a practical theory on plagiarism? paper is just an example!
The connectivity of power across the work is a fundamental element of inspiration to the artist. Many artists in the literature industry have expressed the same ideas as other artists hence enhancing plagiarism. In Computer Science, the act of hacking is considering piracy since its obtaining content in an online source. In the book, “The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism,” Jonathan Lethem demonstrates his views on whether expressing ideas from a historical data is deemed as plagiarism. Jonathan Lethem alludes that exchanging ideas and getting influence enhances creativeness and generates quality artwork. Jonathan Lethem quotes “Finding one’s voice isn’t just emptying and purifying oneself of the words of others but an adopting but adopting and embracing filiations, community, and discourse…” (Lethem 8). The authors argue on the need of passing filiations. It is also evident that human being enhances their skills from the influence of other people. An example of an artist who embraces influence in his art is John Currin. John Currin, an accomplished painter, his artwork contains figurative and satirical images that depict the ancient society including Renaissance and Romanticism. Furthermore, Jonathan Lethem borrowed John Donne article. Besides, the article about William Borough is referenced in the wired article by William Gibson. The book, “the ecstasy of influence: plagiarism,” is a salvo of copyright infringement procedures. The themes in the book emphasize the need for mashing up, enabling power within the society, whether small or great so as to reconstruct a better artist masterpiece. According to Jonathan Lethem “As a writer, I inherit one set of assumptions about copying or borrowing, or what’s called plagiarism …” (Lethem 14) William S. Borough, the author of Naked Lunch, was a prolific writer who perfected the art of literature. William S. Borough literature works incorporated works from other research writers to achieve his writing prowess. Some of William S. Borough was lifted in the American Frictional drama, The Forties, and Fifties. William S. Borough perfected the art of plagiarism, where he used other people’s literature work to achieve his work. William S. Borough referred to the method as “cut-up” method where he wrote an article with excerpts from other attitudes depicting how he used plagiarism to achieve his writing prowess.
The nature of intelligence is a key determinant in a quality artwork. In Steven Johnson “The Myth of Ant Queen,” intelligence is an internal capability that is controlled by a central source. The author explains the complex systems that have its way of working and is independently operated. The ant does a little job that plays a bigger role in enhancing the colony. Steven Johnson argues how intelligence has a more significant role in arts. Steven Johnson quotes “the queen is not an authority figure. She lays eggs and is fed and cared for by the workers. She does not decide which worked does what…” (Johnson 59), depicting the Queens authority in the society. The internet plays a bigger role in creating other sub-content or can serve as an inspiration to the artist. According to Jonathan Lethem, he quoted John Donne passage that “all mankind Is of one volume instead of all of the humanity is one author” (Lethem 18), meaning that Jonathan Lethem rephrased the book so as to avoid complete plagiarism. Furthermore, Jazz and Blues music was also impacted in the world of open source technology, where they could rework on preexisting melodies. The artist had the right of reworking and duplicating sounds literary much easily. During the 17th century in the Jamaican Republic, King Tubby constructed recorded music using the first digital content to achieve better melodious tunes. This means of production later spread to the US and the UK. Jonathan Lethem states that “… If those don’t strike you as essential losses, then consider the remarkable series of “plagiarisms” that …” (Lethem 22). Jonathan Lethem describes the use of plagiarism to invoke influence. Jonathan Lethem “Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism” epitomizes the how the author uses plagiarism and copyright infringement to create quality content. Jonathan Lethem makes a remarkable series of plagiarism. Most of Jonathan Lethem essay, the author doesn’t bring about single ideas, but Lethem synthesizes ideas from different authors without proper citations. Jonathan Lethem uses author’s work to produce a masterpiece artwork. Jonathan Lethem uses plagiarism to create a brilliant art.
Furthermore, Jonathan Lethem pointed out on the main factor for appropriations. His masterpiece clearly showed the benefits of borrowing other people’s content in the society. The author suggests that various artists have used plagiarism to creating wonderfully crafted arts. The author further argues that is it necessary to embrace filiations to enable well-crafted techniques. Ethan Watters through his book Globalization of the American Psyche narrates how Americans have exported the sense of Mental illness to other counties. The misconception of mental illness has been exported successfully to other countries. The first case is the death of the emaciated 14-year old in Hong Kong that sparked an outcry from the Western nations. Jonathan Lethem quotes in his book “An Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism” that ” With no registration requirement, every creative act in a tangible medium is now subject to copyright protection…” (Lethem 34). Furthermore, it provides evidence about certain assertions written by the author. Jonathan quote on plagiarism “And artists, or their heirs, who fall into the trap of attacking the collagists and satirists and digital samplers of their work are attacking the next generation of creators…” (Lethem 43). Jonathan Lethem describes how appropriation enforces authorship. The author suggests how copying enables users to create an incredible masterpiece of work. All content from Jonathan Lethem wasn’t own work, the author basis of facts was obtained either by cultural working or through borrowing from other sources. The bundles were coupled together from other online sources to get a magical cohesive piece.
The primary role of a journalist is to enable public discourse when practiced in ideal and acceptable form. Their central role is to provide people with clear and concise information that may allow them to make an informed decision. Ethan Watters quotes “Americans experience the self as isolated within the individual mind. The Japanese, on the other hand, conceive of a self that is less individuated and more interconnected and dependent on social and environmental contexts…” (196-98). Ethan Watters perceives the use of proper communication strategy for public discourse. Ethen Watters is incredibly unnerved by West understanding of his book “Crazy Like Us: the Globalisation of the Western Mind” which gains much popularity from both the media and public fraternity. Ethan Watters argues about the direct challenge to the dominance of the West and some of the mental illness that comes out of it. Besides, the way the West react to a tragedy like the 2004 tsunami using psychological experts to avert people mind towards is a clear reflection of the growing influence of the West Society. Besides, Ethan converses in four different intellectual travelogues in his thesis. Ethan Watters further argues about the deployment of colossal marketing strategy to sell antidepressant drug Paxil, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (Pols 22-24). Sales of Paxil increased gradually due to the higher number of people committing suicide caused by economic instability. GlaxoSmithKline was selling depression drugs in Japan while selling sleeping drugs in Argentina. Ethan Watters argues that GlaxoSmithKline found it easier to market itself due to its growing dominance in the West and ability to cure that illness. Ethan Watters explains how GlaxoSmithKline cultivated cultural expression in depression and coined mental terms like “schizophrenic” to promote their dominance in Japan. Besides, Ethan Watters quote “Because our culture so highly values an illusion of self-control and control of circumstance, we become abject when contemplating mentation that seems more changeable…’’ (Watters 217-18). Ethan Watters discusses the Western/American misconception of mental illness. Ethan Watters explains how Americans have exported mental illness to the rest of the world. This describes the mega-marketing depression in Japan. According to Ethan Watters “The Mega-Marketing of Depression in Japan,” it details on successful of GlaxoSmithKline, the producer of Paxil, to introduce depression in Japan.
