It is, therefore, the purpose of this research to extensively explore the various ways existing literature covers and interpreted the political ideologies perpetrated by Lou’s Ferdinand Celine in his book, “Journey to the End of the Night. ”
Fischer, T. (2018). Céline’s journey to the cutting edge of literature. [online] the Guardian. Available at: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/jun/15/celine-journey-cutting-edge-literature [Accessed 23 May 2018].
Just like the way Louis-Ferdinand Destouches Celine took a “Journey to the End of Night,” Fischer takes the initial step, the second step, and all the steps necessary in analyzing the background of the outstanding French-based novelist, Celine. In this article, Fischer provides the novelistic background of Celine as well as the authors’ style of preferences and the literary taste. Tibor Fischer paints the Louis-Ferdinand Destouches as an anti-Semitic character who never appreciated the idea of communism. Furthermore, the article provides major concepts of what the readers come across while taking their time to read one of the most popular Celine’s novel-like literary works such as “Journey to the End of Night.”
The strength of this article lies in the overview of the historical background of Celine as far as the novel-authoring world is concerned. Despite the general highlights of Celine’s character and writing style, the article can also be said to have some limitations. The most important shortcoming of this article is that it fails to extensively explore Celine’s “Journey to the cutting edge” of the literature as the author claims. It would have been more beneficial if Tibor Fischer could have provided a brief life overview of his subject.
Nevertheless, “Celine’s journey to the cutting edge of the literature” is a must-have article while conducting the literature research on the various ideological concepts depicted while reading the first Celine’s novel, “Journey to the End of Night.” This article will, therefore, be used not only to provide the literature journey of the French-based author but also bring out various concepts and styles that characterize the author hence better understanding of the literary masterpiece in question.
Sturrock, J. (1989). LRB · John Sturrock · Doctor No. [online] London Review of Books. Available at: https://www.lrb.co.uk/v11/n03/john-sturrock/doctor-no [Accessed 23 May 2018].
“Doctor No” is a book review of the Louis-Ferdinand Destouches or rather Celine’s literary work. The review provides the medical background of Louis-Ferdinand Destouches. It is this rich background in the field of medicine that can be accredited to the successful use of characters who eventually turn out to be medical practitioners. Precisely, Bardamu is one of the characters created by Celine to have a have medical background just like the author himself. Furthermore, it is essential to point out that the rich medical history that Celine enjoys enables him to adopt the medical terms in their proper context within the novel, “Journey to the End of Night.”
One of the strengths of this review is the vivid description of the Louis-Ferdinand Destouches’ background in regard to both writing and medical profession. The review provides all the significant information that the audience requires to understand Celine better and link up his choice of characters and their traits. This review even provides a hint on the authors taste when it comes to picking up some of the elements of fiction such as plot and setting to his literary works, particularly “Journey to the End of Night.” Nonetheless, the review only limits itself to the description of the authors’ medical background, but at no point, it captures the reasons why the themes of technology or even the ideological concepts are depicted in the novel.
However, this review will be used in this particular literature research to provide the medical background of the author, Louis-Ferdinand Destouches and link up with his choice of certain characters that have medical knowledge as far as the technology is concerned.
Murdoch, J. (2012). Journey to the End of the Night. [online] Jim-murdoch.blogspot.co.ke. Available at: http://jim-murdoch.blogspot.co.ke/2012/11/journey-to-end-of-night.html [Accessed 23 May 2018].
According to Murdoch (2012), various elements of fiction are heavily employed by Celine Ferdinand in the literary work, “ that directly aligns with the technology, ideology and the current political trends. Numerous stylistic traits that are referred to as the “metro emotif” are significant in bringing out the political ideologies that are perpetrated by the appropriately chosen characters. Jim Murdoch asserts that the adoption of the dislocated phrases, which are linked by “connective tissues” that are again replaced by the so-called ellipsis points, are not only intended to strike the audience with what can be said to be almost explosive verbal energy, but also bring out the real words that characters use as they undergo various forms of transformation.
The idea that this article vividly describes the various elements of fiction that are employed in Celine’s book is one of the strengths of this particular article to the desired literature research. Besides, this article seems to be helpful in the research as it is marred with direct quotes from the literature text in question hence confirming its reliability. However, the article does not relate clearly how the elements of fiction discussed to address the issue of both technology and human ideologies for the betterment of the human environment.
This article is therefore important in this particular research study as it compares and elaborates on the stylistic features as well as the elements of fiction that Celine used. This article is thus such essential in analyzing the novel setting, plot, and characters among other elements of fiction as based on the defined study topic. It is significant to point out that in any literary work, elements of fiction play a big role in defining the exemplary themes denoted in the literary piece. Therefore, this article will be used as a basis that provides different styles used by the author in realizing the themes of technology, ideology and the politics of the setting.
Brasillach, R. (2013). Robert Brasillach, “Céline’s Journey to the End of the Night” | Counter-Currents Publishing. [online] Counter-Currents Publishing. Available at: https://www.counter-currents.com/2013/05/celines-journey-to-the-end-of-the-night/ [Accessed 23 May 2018].
This article is a translation of Robert Brasillach’s review of the Celine’s “Journey to the End of Night” In this article, the author highlights all the sensitive parts of the novel that make up not only the setting but all the plot of Celine’s story. As the author suggests, it is necessary for the audience to go through Celine’s novel in order to master the main concept being propelled by Celine in his first novel. As Braillach observes, the vocabulary used in the novel can only be termed as classical.
It is important to have this article in the literature research on the topic of technologies and ideologies because of an asset of reasons. For instance, the article provides a concise overview of the major events in the novel as brief as possible. Also, as the literary piece is a translation of the original French masterpiece hence expanding on the number of the concept consumers. However, despite capturing some of the vital events in Celine’s novel, the article authored by Robert Brasillach and translated by Greg Johnson does not directly address the technological concepts or the ideologies expressed in the novel but rather a chronological brief of the significant episodes in the novel.
It can be noted as a great idea to use this article while carrying out literature research on Celine’s novel, in order to master the not only the main ideas in the novel but also the chronology of events in the third person point of view.
Marxists.org (n.d.). Review of “Journey to the End of the Night” by Paul Nizan 1932. [online] Marxists.org. Available at: https://www.marxists.org/archive/nizan/1932/celine-review.htm [Accessed 23 May 2018].
According to the Paul Nizan’s point of view, Celine’s “Journey to the End of the Night” is an enormous novel whose considerable work is marred with a sense of force and the breadth that bourgeois literature’s dwarves do not accustom the audience towards. The author of the article observes that in this picaresque novel, there are numerous incidences that the doctor character subjects his mind in recounting a series of misery incidences in his entire novel life. Paul Nizani takes a different approach in reviewing Celine’s work, “Journey to the End of the Night.” To be precise, the author of the article tends to concentrate on discussing three aspects of Celine’s novel: mood, tone and the language. Besides, Paul Nizan concludes that “Journey to the of the Night” is not a revolutionary literary masterpiece the way it might be sounding but rather the misery encounters of the Bardamu, a doctor character.
This article has its strength in the way the author reviews the different incidences that moods and the tones within the novel are subjects to change regarding the events. Also, Paul Nizan’s article captures the way Celine explicitly employs the not only the classical but artificial language towards the end of the story. However, the Nizan fails in providing what Celine’s work really is if it is not revolutionary.
This article will prove to be much important in this secondary research on the political ideologies and the technological trend since it provides the basic knowledge required to understand the main work authored by Celine.
Self, W. (2006). Céline’s Dark Journey. [online] Nytimes.com. Available at: https://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/10/books/review/Self.t.html [Accessed 23 May 2018].
Will Self-starts by comparing Celine’s “Journey to the End of the Night” novel with Tom Stoppard’s play “Travesties.” In this Will’s article, the real idea of Celine’s work is not just a fictional novel but true life bibliography of Louis-Ferdinand Destouches. The article’s author asserts that Celine’s novel as a replica of the real events that occurred during the World War I or the First World War as some other historians refer to the brutal times in the history of the planet earth. Will Self, therefore, compares the life of Louis-Ferdinand Destouches and the character Ferdinand Bardamu who both suffers during the time world is in a fighting mood. Moreover, the article captures how the author, Celine, tears the different beliefs apart. Christianity, socialism, and capitalism are all considered to be the physical bonds that only holds poor people captives.
This article has its strength in the way the author provides a description of the events that occur during the First World War which leaves the characters in the somber mood as well as physically impaired. Also, the article outlines a real way of viewing of Celine within the context of beliefs such as socialism, capitalism alongside Christianity. However, the article does not provide concrete reasons as to why the author incorporates the idea of the technology in the novel.
Nonetheless, the Will Self’s article will be of great help in this literary research as it provides the perception of the author on the real ideologies in the current modern society. This, therefore, will prove to be useful in the whole process of the secondary research study since not only the plot but also the precise theme of ideology is explicitly explored in the article.
Yushinski, O., 2015. Journey to the End of Ideology: Ideology and Jouissance in Céline’s Journey to the End of the Night. S: Journal of the Circle for Lacanian Ideology Critique, 6.
Yushinkski (2015 p.6) provides a detailed explanation of the way some literary analysts reasons out on the criticisms that they subjected Celine to during their analysis. However, the author of this article also captures those analysists that dared to stand up for Celine and protect his ideologies regarding the way he refers to the mentality of people in the novel “Journey to the End of the Night.” By terming such criticisms not only defaming and deceptive, but the author of this article also goes ahead top paint Celine as a literary revolutionist who believes in sharing the concepts of both political and aesthetic ideologies as far as the world revolution is concerned.
The strength of the Yoshinski’s article in this particular literature research study is hidden in the way the author extensively navigates through different concepts of both political and aesthetic ideologies. It should be noted that ideologies make a lions’ share on the percentage of the present themes one can easily stumble on while on the journey through the pages of the novel. The only limitation that can be deduced from the Yoshinski’s sort-of-review of the Louis Ferdinand work is the failure of the author to explore the real realm of the challenge at heart: revolution.
However, this article will be used while laying out the strong foundation in the research of political ideologies as held by non-other than the novel’s author, Louis-Ferdinand Destouches or Celine as commonly referred to by majority that forms the audience of literary masterpieces.
Sturrock, J., 1990. Céline: Journey to the End of the Night. Cambridge University Press.
The book by Sturrock (1990), provides a well-articulated and thought way of examining and reviewing the Louis Ferdinand Celine’s novel. The initially captured aspect is about the significance and contribution that the novel has towards the world’s area of literature. The book author illustrates and marks Bardamu’s experiences and gets to link them to the real world life experiences. The book has a comparison of the events in the novel and the current perspective on the occurrences thus outlining on the aspect of modernity. Also, the book illustrates the anti-Semitic elements adopted by Lous Ferdinand Celine in his novel by reflecting on the political occurrences in France at the time of the novel development.
The book is important for the research because it provides an extensive discussion about the political revolutions which is the amongst the core study concepts. The novel has a clear depiction of the various circumstances that can only take place or experience unless the political influences induce them. The Bardamu decision of becoming a soldier gets him into narrow survival such that he managed to escape death in the First World War which is believed to have been as a result of the global politics. Subsequently, it can be considered that the African colonialism that gets Bardamu in other experiences is influenced specifically by the politics of France. The acts did subject Bardamu to real humanism concernedness.
The book has its strength in the arguments presented because it captures the elements of politics and its associated impacts to the society. Bardamu represents the common challenges that the society undergoes at any time the rivals deepen due to political differences or generally due to political interests. Nevertheless, the book has got a limitation as per the requirements of the defined research. The book does not provide an exemplary examination of the technology revolution as required in the study. Further, it does not give a clear perspective on the world’s history by outlining the various events that have been marked in the novel. However, the credit of the book is positive about the politic aspect which is part of the research interests.
Scullion, R., Solomon, P. H., & Spear, T. C. (1995). Céline and the politics of difference. Hanover, NH: Univ. Press of New England.
The Scullion, Solomon and Spear (1995) have arguments that provide an exploration of the various forms that have been laid on the various criticism subjected to the work of Louis Ferdinand Celine. The identified aspects that were criticized are the identity of politics as well as multiculturalism. The reflection projected in the book reflects on the homogeneity of power that captures the variables of sex, ethnicity alongside racial differences among others. The book has a contemporary intent of comparing the stylistic work of Celine in his novel with the modern perspective on life. As a matter of providing a clear description of the criticism about the novel, the book does capture other people’s criticism which reflects on the aspects of freedom and the critical variable of self-assurance. There is an attempt to link the novel of “Journey to the End of the Night” with the “Death on Credit” by broadly discussing the fundamentals of the books.
The Scullion, Solomon and Spear’s book is important to the study because first, it reflects on the actual research themes whereby it reflects very well on the political revolutions. The aspect is well compared to the current worldly situation. Secondly, the book has a wide coverage of information as it points to the other sources that provide a general idea of the novel’s elements.
The book is great as it holds the strength of incorporating a range of readers and their views thus establishing a good basis of accommodating a list of perspectives. Therefore, the book is broad in its discussion about the intended concepts because they can easily be deduced from the rage of the perspectives provided thus substantiating better on the key attributes of modernity, politics and historical development. However, the book as the source of information for the research has the weakness of failing to directly and specifically outlining the aspects of the novel and getting them compared to other books. The specific differentiation is not well displayed because the approach of the book was to provide a vivid comparison of other readers, sources perspectives on the novel.
Céline, L.F., 2006. Journey to the End of the Night (Vol. 1036). New Directions Publishing.
As denoted by Celine (2006), where the novel is interpreted from French by RALPH MANHEIM the new director for the publication of the novel, humanism is clearly linked to various experiences that show how men tend to survival in their lifetime. Bardamu is involved in a list of commitments where he goes through difficulties and certain experiences that changed her perception of life. As described by Manheim, Bardamu had a heart of a rabbit where he was full of fear, but the life experiences went through left him courageous to find comfort which was never found. He engaged in discussions and experiences that illustrated what is defined in the current philosophical history.
The interpretation is done by about the novel’s ideal for the research because it provides a clear description of how politicians tend to go about things. The illustration on how the President Poincare was to conduct an inauguration of the puppy show does provide a sense of understanding the development and existence of politics. The translation summarizes the novel content and thus depicting the aspect of ideology and also on how politics are run such that celebrations, meetings, and other activities are created for the overall advantage of the politicians. At the same time, the interpretation as well depicts the time when Bardamu got employed in a technology-based company, Ford. Therefore, the journal is essential in the development of the research as it outlines on the aspects that focus on French language, president’s operations and working in vehicle manufacturing company that is surrounded by innovation and invention.
The author’s arguments are constructive in the way of understanding operations of politicians as it gives examples that substantiate on the way politics are run. Also, the author is smart at using certain stylistic approaches that gives a deeper understanding on the real world experiences by cutting across the six continents hence capturing the involvement and interaction of persons with different speaking languages. However, the argument is limited to the research because it does not directly link the happenings to the study purposes that targets to illustrate on how humanism, as depicted in the novel, is associated to politics and philosophy as well as technological revolution.
Wolf, G., 2006. The portrayal of negative qualities in a doctor as a potential teaching tool in medical ethics and humanism: “Journey to the End of Night” by Louis-Ferdinand Celine. Postgraduate medical journal, 82(964), pp.154-156.
Wolf (2006), well denotes the novel as a fictional story that provides a description of how medical students are taught using the physicians and patients. The mechanism is viewed as the most powerful teaching resource. Well, the notion is outlined from the Bardamu’s experiences as a doctor in France in the hospital and as a psychiatrist. The Louis‐Ferdinand Céline’s novel substantiates the ideology on medical education. The interpretation by Wolf does focus on the adventure of Ferdinand Bardamu as a medical student who was seeking comfort in life. The author depicts that Bardamu searched for relief in life. While as a soldier in the First World War, trader during the African colonialism, a factory worker in the United States of America and finally as a determined doctor where he served the poor. Wolf views Dr. Bardamu as an unprofessional person who does not hold any virtues defining a physician.
Apart from the personal life in the bibliographic form, Wolf explains the importance of employing certain literary styles in the writings of different works that come from distinct sources. Precisely, the author of this article describes the fundamental significance of using both poems and novels while writing the medical masterpieces in promoting the teachings and learning processes of the medical concepts. As far as the author of this article is concerned, the ethical practices are paramount in the medical profession as Wolf directly draws the example of the Celine and his work. Furthermore, Wolf condemns unethical attributes that are being practiced by qualified medical practitioners as justified by the fact that he criticizes the idea that doctor ought to have responded to the abortion case that was presented in the novel instead of remaining silent at the hour of need.
The fact that this article is a rich literary asset that captures almost everything inside and even outside the Celine’s “Journey to the End of the Night” makes it a valuable tool in the secondary research about the political ideologies propelled by Celine. Precisely the merits of this article lie in the idea that the author vividly explores the life of Celine all along from his birth to the professional life. Nonetheless, it is a limitation to both the author and the article as the work only covers the aesthetic revolution in a large extent but does not at any particular point describe the political side of the revolution found in the original text of Celine. But all in all, this article is a great asset in this research as it not only provides the bibliographic information on the author of the novel “Journey to the End of the Night” but covers the real issues of the ideologies necessary as the this research’s variable.
The field of medicine has been criticized across the world because it has demanded much from technology as far as the management of the global healthcare is concerned. The Bardamu’s story creates an ideology on how medical students are thought thus making the journal essential to my research. The line of technology has been slightly touched when the aspect of Bardamu working as a factory worker arose. And this gives the clear understanding of how technology revolution is denoted in the novel. Therefore, the underlined study will be well influenced by the arguments provided Wolf now that the focus is on the ideology of medical field.
The arguments projected by Wolf are advantages on the line that he portrays well the study concept of ideology and technology. The approach adopted by the author is clear and direct to the deduced subject which is about the negative quality of doctors as defined within the context of humanism. However, the journal is limited because it does not bring out the idea of politics which has been observed in developing countries.
Romanillos, J. L. (2015). Nihilism and modernity: Louis‐Ferdinand “Céline’s Journey to the end of the night.” Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, 40(1), pp.128-139.
According to Romanilos (2015), the review and analysis of the Louis Ferdinand Celine novel the artistic work were written within the context of displaying the literary geographies of the human modernity. In the journal argument, the novel is compared to the Ulysses or Heart of Darkness as attributed way of defining the experiences of modernity which depicts the adopted uniqueness of the novel authors writing style. Romanilos states how the novel distinctively displays the experiences of modernity by referring to them as a type of nihilism. Well, the exploration reflects on the creative destruction of modernity as the theme through the experiences of abjection and disenchantment. The took an exploration of the nihilistic writing approach that is expressed in the journey of Bardamu who experiences a geographical adventure among other experiences that denote humanism as difficult. There is also an examination of the understanding of the theme modernity within the context of nihilism interpretation by exploring the various spatial moments that surround Bardamu in the novel. The moments are not limited to First World War deaths capes, the African colonialism by the French, life experiences in New York. The journal does as well reflect on how the novel writing approach is connected with the manifest in the line of exploring the experiences of modernity.
The journal by Romanilos (2015) is essential for the study. First, its analysis of Celine’s work denotes the attribute or concept of modernity as one of the critical themes in the novel. The technology revolution has been a concept that is influencing the creation of modernity in life now that there are so many things surrounding it thus being a great area of interest. Romanilos outlines in a clear argument how modernity is linked to nihilism or negativism. Since the study aims at studying technology revolution, the paper is supportive on a broad basis. Technology has been embraced at large, but the associated negativism of the same is too high in consideration of global network as a case study. The novel is well defined to reflect on the experiences of negativism and thus providing a good line of understanding consequences of technology.
The Romanilos analysis of Celine ‘s work has an advantage within the line of executing the study because it highlights the key aspects as well denoted in the study. The description of modernity and it’s associated challenges as well as the experiences provide a great basis for understanding the context of the study. However, as far as the broadness and extensiveness of the research are concerned, Romanilos work does not capture all the intended aspects and themes of politics and philosophy thus getting it limited in that manner.

Irving, A., 2008. Journey to the End of the Night: Disillusion and Derangement among the Senses. Journeys, 9(2).
According to Irving (2008), the interpretation of Celine’s novel deduces the themes of “disillusion and derangement.” The themes capture the exploration of the journey that is full of life experiences and trials as experienced by Bardamu. The author outlines the experiences of moving to new places that are unfamiliar where the character, Bardamu is tested and thus showing his experiences to the unknown perceptions and sensations. The Irving article relies on the Louis-Ferdinand Céline’s fictional journey that cuts across from Europe to Africa than to America. There are appreciations of the human nature travel and movement. There is a deduction of unique understanding and knowledge about humanism. The article provides an essential contemplating epistemological question on how the world can be known and understood by considering the transitory encounters. And the author raises concern on if the desired gains were achieved at the end of the journey.
The author of the article provides a literal understanding of Celine’s novel “Journey to the End of the Night” such that the targets to understand what could be the success of the journey and travels that Bardamu made. The author deduces the concepts of negativism and giving up which have been explored within the novel as Bardamu travels from Europe to Africa but faces disappointments, gives up and moves to America but later returns to France where his frustrations seem to be a climax. The movement to Africa denotes the aspect of politics as the French politicians targeted to invent Africa and it happens that Bardamu is a victim of African colonialism, his death escape during the First World War is a symbol of political consequences.
The strength of the article is depicted on the basis that the article provides an extensive review of how the world can be understood thus outlining the aspect of modernity which is gauged or measured by the technological revolutions. Therefore, the article provides a basis for understanding the worldly technological revolution now that the technology has influenced the mode of traveling and above all adventuring the new interesting places. However, the article is limited in such a manner that the research core concepts of politics and ideology haven’t been well discussed. Instead, the concentrations were about the nourishment and the modernity in the globe.
Gray, E.F., 1989. Enfin Céline vint: A Contextualist Reading of” Journey to the End of the Night” and “Death on the Installment Plan,” and: Camus: A Critical Examination, and: Claude Simon and the “Transgressions of Modern Art,” and: Michael Tournier: “Philosophy and Fiction.” MFS Modern Fiction Studies, 35(4), pp.833-835.
Gray provides a sensational comparison of the Louis Ferdinand Celine’s work to both Claudi Simion work “Transgressions of Modern Art (Evans, 1988)” and the Michael Tournier’s work, “Philosophy and Fiction (Davis, 1986)”. The stylistic writing adopted by Celine is articulated in the modern art because the way the author developed the novel gave the best fiction ever in the 20th century. The article author was interested in examining the novel writing approach and how the content confines to a philosophical way of understanding the world history. Notably, Celine’s writing approach retains the tone even after the Second World War and thus giving unclear manner of determining the audience of the novel. The approach has facilitated the ease of connecting the novel to various themes that have experienced revolutions.
The strength of the article is pointed to the approach adopted by the author to compare how ideology has been represented in the novel and thus making the article ideal for the underlined study. The article depicts how the absurdity surrounding the human life is in existence. However, the work is limited for the research because it does not clearly link the activities or occurrences in the novel to the outlined themes of study. Regardless of the stress on the stylistic writing adopted by the author of the novel, the deduction of the connectivity between the politics, philosophy and technology revolution has not been well outlined.
