Community policing and problem-oriented policing are diverse models aimed at addressing the issue of crimes within distinct American communities. While the two models have been found to be effective when combined, they have several similarities and differences that must be considered before doing so. Firstly, Community policing is an effort towards repairing the rupture instigated by the innovation of the patrol car. Therefore, this model ensures a positive relationship between the police and the community by creating efficiency in the police department (Palmiotto & Unnithan, 2010). Moreover, community policing introduces the hope that crime rates can be decreased through improved interpersonal relationships as well as enhanced interactions between the police and the community. As such, community programs like neighborhood watch and DARE help create and strengthen the bonds. Hence, the idea is to restore lost trust by putting an officer on foot control or other community services.
Problem-oriented policing (POP) is depicted as a reform philosophy that addressed the cause of crimes and social disorders. The primary focus in this model is to explicate the social upheaval and other crimes for purposes of increasing the quality of life in the community. The philosophy works based on the argument that crime can be reduced by focusing on its root; thus improving life in the society.

Palmiotto and Unnithan (2010) assert that the police department that use problem-oriented policing make use of the SARA model to remedy the issue of crime and assess their success. Notably, this policing is sometimes part of the community policing because the police departments work with individuals, but they primarily focus on the problem. Unlike community policing, POP becomes problematic when police officers are not adequately trained especially in research collection (Peak & Glensor, 2012). Therefore, law enforcement officers are bound to use experience and opinions from individuals in the community devoid of real analytical skills.
