Farming is an extensive activity that covers many aspects of nature. In practicing this activity, the symbiotic factor in the environment has to get considered for successful production in agriculture. The fact that organisms depend on each other to complete the cycle in the food chain as well as for sustainability in life is of great importance to farmers.
Therefore, it is by taking note of these factors that Joel Salatin rears animals in the same farm he uses for growing crops. This farm known as the Polyface farm is seen to thrive in agriculture and this is as a result of the excellent farming practices. The presence of poultry, pigs, and cows amongst others is of great significance. This paper focuses on the role of the cows on the farm.
Firstly, cows are vital contributors to the development of soil facilitating the formation of topsoil. New soil gets built from underground up. This process occurs when the cow is eating the grass in a manner that there is shedding of the root mass. The fungi and earthworms in the soil break the mass into rich humus creating a channel which air, rainwater, and worms move to cause topsoil formation. Proper grazing of the cows in the Polyface farm has ensured the composition of soil hence fertile soil used for planting crops.
Moreover, the pasture also experiences a buildup in organic matter due to animal waste deposits guaranteeing continuity in growth after few days. The first bite by the cows does the work of causing nutrients that is why the farmer has to monitor the feeding to avoid another round of feeding on the same grass by the cows.

The grass converts sunlight into biomass in the course of time. In conclusion, the importance of cows in farming should not be taken for granted and farmers need to embrace them as part of their farms.
